Michael B Jordan Talks Fantastic Four & Playing a Superhero Again

Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four movie was plagued with a mixture of bad reviews, offscreen drama, and a poor fan reaction. One of the few highlights of the film was arguably the performance by Michael B. Jordan, despite the controversy around him being cast to play Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the film.

Jordan was featured on a recent episode of the Bill Simmons Podcast, where he discussed his newly-released Rocky spinoff film, Creed, his reaction to the Fantastic Four backlash – and how he, as a comic book fan, would gladly play a superhero again.

The Fantastic Four reboot catastrophe hasn’t dampened Jordan’s spirits, as the actor said he’s ready to suit-up again and delve into another comic book film adaptation, during his interview with Bill Simmons. Simmons questioned Jordan about the modern rite of passage that is starring in a superhero film, and got the following response (hat tip CBM):

“Which is one that you know I would gladly do again, it was a, as me being a comic book fan, and yeah, for that, it was just like a dream come true being able to play that character.”

Jordan, who is a self-professed comic book fan, has recently been tied in rumors to another comic book movie adaptation, the feature film version of Blood Brothers, a vampire comedy. The film, which will be based on a Dark Horse comic, pairs Nick and Tree together, two vampires that are dealing with a threat to the human world, in a sort of supernatural buddy-flick.

Simmons later questioned Michael B. Jordan about the negative buzz that came off of Fantastic Four, to which Jordan replied:

“No, yeah, I got out of there pretty clean, you know, it’s one of those things where it was a lesson for me that really made me realize that things aren’t in your control.”

This conversation comes in the wake of the news that Fox has officially removed the Fantastic Four sequel from its upcoming roster. This comes as little surprise to fans that have been following the long and twisted tale of the ill-conceived film.

Jordan has had a prolific acting career over the past decade and a half, with credits that include The Wire, Friday Night Lights, and Parenthood. Fantastic Four wasn’t even Jordan’s first foray into the world of superheroes. He provided the voice of Cyborg/Victor Stone in the DC Universe Animated Film Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013).

The Rocky spinoff Creed, where Jordan plays the son of boxer Apollo Creed, is already getting rave reviews, and even sports a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The performance has even garnered praise from the man who portrayed Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films, Carl Weathers. Jordan’s career is hotter than ever as a result, so the likelihood that he can overcome the Fantastic Four film seems to be pretty high.

Creed is now playing in theaters.
