Midnight Mass Secretly Teased Its Ending In Episode 4

Midnight Mass slyly teases its ending in episode 4. The Netflix limited series created by Mike Flanagan follows the inhabitants of the remote Crocket Island through a vampire takeover. One of the key characters is Erin Greene (Kate Siegel) who, like her old friend, Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford), moves back to the island when life on the mainland doesn’t go according to plan. She returns to the home of her deceased abusive mother where she awaits the birth of her treasured baby.

In one of Midnight Mass’ tragic twists, Erin’s baby disappears from inside her, and she delivers a monologue to Riley recounting a time during her childhood when she got a dove, and her mother insisted that they clip its wings. She forced a reluctant young Erin to hold the bird after stating that everyone gets their wings metaphorically clipped, and that, for her, it was when Erin was born. As a result, Erin released the bird and received a beating from her mother. Initially, the story seems to just further examine Erin’s past and issues with her mom, but it’s really something more.

The story Erin tells actually foreshadows the ending of Midnight Mass, which sees her slash the vampire’s wings to ribbons as it feeds on her blood. Not only does the imagery of clipping wings play into this tease, but her history as a victim of abuse, both at the hands of her mother and her husband, supports why she is able to accomplish this feat even as the vampire kills her. The scenes also parallel one another to show the full scope of Erin’s character development throughout Midnight Mass.

Erin’s monologue in Midnight Mass episode 4 contains obvious parallel imagery to the final episode in which she uses a knife to cut the vampire’s wings, thereby preventing him from flying to the mainland before sunrise. The same monologue also references her lifetime of abuse first by her mother, and then her husband. This also foreshadows the fate of Siegel’s Midnight Mass character and explains why she is the only one capable of crippling the vampire. Her years of pain have built up such a tolerance for suffering that she can function enough to clip the vampire’s wings even as it drains her of her blood.

The two scenes in conjunction also serve to highlight Erin’s development throughout the series, teasing her progress from a victim to a hero. The monologue in episode 4 is all about Erin falling into patterns of allowing abusive people into her life. It ends with her recounting how those patterns ended when she became pregnant, but then the vampire takes even that away from her. The vampire, therefore, becomes Erin’s final abuser, an integral figure to her character’s central theme in Midnight Mass, one of forgiving herself and overcoming her demons. She is finally able to clip the wings of her ultimate abuser and thereby gleans some greater meaning behind her longtime suffering.

Erin’s tragic monologue in episode 4 is one of many throughout Midnight Mass, but this one in particular foreshadows the ending of both the vampire and Erin. It fits perfectly into Flanagan’s style of introducing small details that secretly have huge meaning later on in the narrative, and it greatly contributes to the miniseries’ main theme of forgiveness and overcoming one’s past. Small but significant moments like this are what continue to pull audiences into Mike Flanagan’s horror series like Midnight Mass, and viewers hope that he will continue the intrigue in his next project, The Fall of the House of Usher.
