Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took (better known as Merry and Pippin) are incredibly close friends, not to mention that they are also first cousins — Esmeralda Brandybuck, Merry’s mother, happens to be Paladin Took’s younger sister. Together, they make the naughtiest, yet most adorable, pair in all of Hobbiton, probably even the Shire.

Their many childhood antics notwithstanding, Merry and Pippin become important players in The Lord of the Rings storyline after “forcing” Frodo into accepting their help and company on his quest. There are a few important facts about this pair that have not been mentioned in the cinematic versions.

10 They Are (Distantly) Related To The Bagginses

Although not a very complicated character, Frodo’s family tree bears more fruit than it could possibly hold. In fact, the Baggins patriarch, Balbo, had five children, each of whom produced a number of their own offspring.

Along one line there are the male descendants (those who have retained the name like Bilbo and his nephew), but there are also female descendants who married into other prominent Shire families such as the Tooks, Brandybucks, Bolgers, Hornblowers, and so on. Merry and Pippin are related to Bilbo as twice-removed first cousins as well as twice-removed second cousins, and to Frodo in the same manner except once-removed.

9 Merry Is The Tallest Of His Race

Although both of them get stone drunk on Entwash, and, as a result, become the tallest Hobbits to ever live, it’s Merry who is ever so slightly taller than his buddy (raising an important question as to his gluttony.) Anyway, both of them reach about four feet six inches, which is gigantic compared to the standard three feet six inches one would expect.

They even surpass the legendary Bandobras “Bullroarer” Took, whose claim to fame was knocking the head of Golfimbul, a Goblin-chief, straight into a burrow (which is how Golf apparently came into existence)

8 Pippin Murders An Olog-hai

The Olog-hai belong to a superior tier of Troll culture, having been produced by Sauron’s genetic experiments. They are claimed to be several feet tall, with an armor made of pointed scales, and use horrifying implements like morningstars, tusks, warhammers and claws in battle.

Of all people, it is Pippin who manages to kill one of these beasts, although he does get trapped under its giant corpse. As heroic as he can be, though, Pippin is also foolish enough to directly touch the Palantir of Saruman, thereby accessing the unbearably dark majesty of Sauron’s powers.

7 Merry Is A Knight Of Rohan

When Eomer takes the throne of Rohan (as is his right after the death of both Theoden and Theodred), he honors Meriadoc Brandybuck with a knighthood, even dubbing him “Holdwine.”

Along with the title, Eowyn gifts him with the Horn of the Mark, a Dwarven horn whose runic magic was purported to scare villains away while encouraging the heroes at the same time. It is first employed during the Scouring of the Shire, in order to bring the Bywater Hobbits to the battle against Saruman and Grima.

6 Pippin Is A Knight Of Gondor

Like Merry, Pippin is also made a knight, but his allegiance is directed towards Gondor. It is the magnanimous King Elessar who knights him in honor of, and as a reward for, services rendered during the War of the Ring, specifically in the Battle of the Black Gate (the one with the Olog-hai) as well as the Battle of Pelennor Fields.

It is not known what other benefits are associated with the designation, except that it’s usually granted to Gondor’s noblefolk, making Pippin a special case, indeed.

5 Merry Becomes The Master Of Buckland

This title is given to the nominal chief of the Brandybuck clan, while also granting a few bureaucratic rights over the Shire at large. It was originally established by Gorhenhad Oldbuck, the first Brandybuck, whose territory covered the Brandywine river and the Eastfarthing Marish.

Merry’s role as the Master of Buckland did not involve any serious political work, thankfully; imagine either of them making campaign speeches or canvassing for votes. It’s just not in their nature.

4 Pippin Becomes The Thain Of The Shire

The Thain of the Shire technically refers to the highest level of military authority in the Shire, having been held for the most part by members of the Took family.

Pippin’s role as Thain (on which he spends half a century) included the protection of Westfarthing section, which consisted of all its major areas, such as Hobbiton, Michel Delving, Bywater, and Tuckborough. One could argue that, between them, Pippin and Merry were pretty much in control of the entirety of the Shire after Sauron’s downfall.

3 Merry Writes A Paper On Linguistics

Having spent a lot of time with the Rohirrim people, Merry finds their culture fascinating. Several years post the One Ring fiasco, Merry constructs a library of sorts containing tomes about the history and traditions of Middle-earth, with a focus on languages.

He writes a short document drawing parallels with the Rohan vocabulary and Hobbitish (a variant of the Common Speech or Westron.) Merry discovers that they do actually share a lot of loanwords, for instance the term “mathoms” which meant “baubles” in both the Shire and Rohirrim tongues.

2 Pippin Names His Son After Faramir

Half a dozen years after the War of the Ring, Peregrin Took weds Diamond of Long Cleeve, who is five years his junior. When their first son is born, he is named Faramir, after his dear friend during his time at Gondor.

This is a touching tribute to their relationship, especially considering that Pippin saves his life after his father, Denethor, tries to immolate both of them. Interestingly, Faramir Took is paired with Goldilocks Gamgee, one of Sam’s daughters, although there is no data as to their children.

1 They Are Buried In The Royal Tomb Of Gondor

This pair of Hobbits are seemingly inseparable, even in death. Merry and Pippin both “retire” from their respective posts in the 63rd year of the Fourth Age, and traveled to Rohan and Gondor, respectively.

It is unknown how old they are when they die, but they certainly live well into their first century. After their deaths, their tombs are transferred to Gondor, as Aragorn wanted them to be buried next to him (but this only happens around 57 years later.)
