Rival Joe Exotic Documentary Coming After Netflix’s Tiger King

A rival Joe Exotic documentary is coming after Netflix’s Tiger King. It’s been just over two weeks since the bizarre, yet fascinating true-crime series made its mark on Netflix viewers around the world, and its popularity looks set to continue.

The series follows the efforts of Joe Exotic, aka Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, as he works to maintain his private zoo, the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. Exotic, as well as his animal park, are a constant source of concern for animal rights activist Carole Baskin, who runs the non-profit animal sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue. As the animosity between the two reaches its peak, Exotic is arrested and imprisoned on a murder-for-hire scheme, which he planned to finally get rid of Baskin. Ever since production finished on the Netflix series, there has been considerable push back from several of the program’s cast of characters. Baskin, in particular, has been vocal about her representation in the series – specifically regarding the case involving her ex-husband, Don Lewis. And most recently, Exotic’s inspiration for starting his own private zoo, Doc Antle, also made statements against the series.

With no small amount of controversy surrounding Tiger King, it’s clear that more stories need to be told. Because this is the case, a new Tiger King documentary is already in the works. Investigation Discovery is preparing a follow up to the hit series, entitled Investigating The Strange World Of Joe Exotic. The ID production intends to reveal “secrets” that only Joe Exotic knows and to delve deeper into the life of Baskin. Said ID president, Henry Schleiff:

“Viewers are understandably riveted by Netflix’s Tiger King, but the millions of true crime fans around the world were left wanting more. ID is the perfect place to find the inevitable sequel to this drama – featuring a missing husband, a hit man, and the illegal business of exotic animals. It’s time to let the cat out of the bag and address the lingering questions that viewers demand be answered.”

The new look at the world of Tiger King’s cast of characters will contain previously unseen footage and delve more deeply into who Jeff Lowe is, as well as provide closer examinations of Exotic, Baskin, and Antle. This sort of investigation will likely come as a welcome addition to Tiger King fans who have wanted to know more ever since Netflix launched the series. Whether or not Investigating The Strange World Of Joe Exotic will right the wrongs as claimed by the likes of Baskin or Antle, however, remains to be seen. From the very brief snippet of information that ID has provided about their new program, it does seem that this latest offering just might have the opposite effect. A fuller exploration into their lives might be the last thing that either Baskin or Antle want. At present, the ID Tiger King follow up has no official release date or trailer.

Probably one of the most fascinating things about Tiger King is the fact that much of what takes place in the series just seems too bizarre to be true. There is truth in the bizarre story, however, with more truths very likely buried beneath the bigger reveals. It appears this is a story that isn’t going to go away any time soon, and given the degree of public interest in it, there’s a good chance that we can expect to learn more than ever about the program’s cast of characters. Whether or not what we ultimately learn from all this is entertaining will remain to be seen.
