March has been a huge month for tentpole movies with the release of Logan, Kong: Skull Island, and Beauty and the Beast, and the fun certainly isn’t stopping there. One of the most anticipated releases is the big-screen reboot of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise simply called Power Rangers and it is primed to head into theaters this upcoming weekend in a big way.

However, before fans can leap into the present and future of the Power Rangers, it’s always helpful to take a look at where they came from. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show first aired in the U.S. in 1993. The show was created by Haim Saban, who cleverly obtained stock footage largely unseen by American audiences from the Japanese series, Super Sentai. Saban then built a show around the campy action found in those shows, by re-dubbing the action scenes while balancing it with watered-down high school drama. All of these elements combined to create a billion-dollar sensation seemingly overnight

Screen Junkies are known for several things; however, they may be best known for their Emmy-nominated Honest Trailers web-series. The program takes movie and franchises, both young and old, and breaks them down with brutally honest and hilarious critiques of the given film’s strengths and flaws. The next target on their hit list is the 1995 gem, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, just in time for their big screen return of Power Rangers.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie continued the story about ordinary teens who were gifted supernatural powers by means of extra-terrestrial technology. This included individual power suits and the ability to pilot gigantic mech robots, aka Zords, who are designed in the form of various prehistoric animals. Much like Netflix’s Voltron, the five heroes have the ability to to combine their Zords into an even larger robot known as Megazord, who is fashioned in a humanoid form.

For better or worse, the franchise managed to stay relatively consistent with its look and tone for over 20 years. There has been chatter that many fans are uneasy with the changes that are being made in this month’s anticipated reboot. However, leave it to the Screen Junkies to shine a revealing light on the entire Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise and its history, while simultaneously proving why the time is right to update the property for a new generation. Now the biggest remaining question is whether or not Power Rangers will take the franchise to a higher level, or will it simply be a reminder of what came before? We will all find out shortly.
