Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The 10 Rangers Ranked From Worst To Best

When a property exists in pop culture for as long as the Power Rangers franchise, there’s bound to be quite a bit of nostalgia for its original series. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ran for three seasons beginning in 1993 and that original run remains a fan favorite for adults who grew up watching the show. While it began with a team of five teenagers, it grew with the addition of the Green Ranger. Four of the original cast members also departed the series, leaving casting directors to bring in new teens to replace them.

With 10 total Power Rangers over the seasons, the team members each had their own strengths and weaknesses. Only one remained a Power Ranger from the first episode of the series to the last, but some moved on to additional teams or returned in later seasons to help out new groups of Rangers. Tanya, who was chosen to replace Aisha at the end of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers run never actually used a power coin or donned a suit, not becoming a Ranger until Power Rangers Zeo, so she isn’t included in this particular lineup.

10 Rocky

The second Red Ranger of the team, Rocky often gets a lot of flack from fans for not being the same leader as the original Red Ranger. Rocky, however, is more a victim of storylines than anything else. Rocky’s character development is often set aside in favor of other characters getting the spotlight.

He’s one of the more impulsive of team members, ready to jump into action at a moment’s notice. While that’s an admirable trait for someone helping others in trouble, it also means he doesn’t always listen to the advice of his team, or tries to take on situations alone that are too much for him. He does stay with the team until the Zeo season, but his lack of awareness of his limits, and his impulsive nature leave him as the lowest ranked Ranger.

9 Zack

The first Black Ranger, Zack is not the teammate to take things seriously. He’s a bit of a showboat, more interested in making his moves look good than he is at making sure they’re effective. He’s still a decent fighter, and always willing to lend a hand to his team leader.

Zack edges out Rocky amongst the Rangers because, while he is pretty impulsive, he’s not quite as on the level of Rocky. He does, however, have a tendency to focus on the wrong things in dire situations. Zack gets caught up in ruined dates and forgotten birthdays when the world is at stake. He also leaves the team in the middle of the second season, deciding to commit to being a representative on a teen peace conference council.

8 Billy

There’s no question that Blue Ranger Billy is the smartest Ranger. He might even be the smartest person in Angel Grove. Where Billy excels, however, is not in the big fights with the team as he’s much better at working behind the scenes.

Most of the teenagers who become Power Rangers in the Mighty Morphin era of the franchise have experience with martial arts, or at a minimum, with self defense. Billy doesn’t have that foundation to help him battle monsters. His friends have to train him. Where he doesn’t need training is taking apart and understanding alien technology. He becomes a valuable asset to the team in Power Rangers Zeo without even needing to wear a suit or have special powers, and that’s a better fit for him.

7 Trini

Like Rocky, Trini doesn’t end up with quite as much of the spotlight as her teammates. She edges out Rocky, Zack, and Billy, however, because she does have a firm commitment to learning new martial arts techniques with the goal of helping the team.

Trini, for example, takes it upon herself to learn a very specific type of kung fu. She ends up using it to fight a monster alone to save her friends. Ultimately, Trini leaves the team along with Zack to become a part of the same conference, leaving her work as a Power Ranger to someone else.

6 Aisha

Aisha is the young woman who replaces Trini in the role of the Yellow Ranger. While the two both have experience with martial arts, their approach to being a Ranger is very different. While Trini is more likely to hang back and see what the group decides, Aisha is more likely to try to take charge.

That can lead to her butting heads with some of her teammates. Aisha is, however, a great addition to the team. She leaves the team behind to help animals exhibiting strange behavior. That’s admirable, but it’s her giving someone she just met her place on the team that is concerning. She had no way of knowing if Tanya would be a good fit or not.

5 Kat

Kat is one of two Rangers that begins her time on the show as an enemy thanks to a spell from villain Rita Repulsa. She demonstrates her resolve and moral compass when she’s able to break free of the spell on her own. Kat definitely has the attitude to be a Power Ranger – and goes on to be the Pink Ranger in two more teams.

Kat ranks in the middle, however, because she spends a lot of time unable to defend herself in a fight. Many of the confrontations she’s involved in end with a teammate having to save her, which pulls them from the larger battle at hand.

4 Kimberly

Like Kat, original Pink Ranger Kimberly sees herself in her fair share of damsel in distress moments. The difference is that Kimberly is usually faster at finding a way out of them. She flies a plane when her uncle is knocked out by a sleeping potion and also leads a team of Ranger in the past.

Kimberly is the one Ranger that leaves that truly struggles with the decision. Instead of leaving the decision for a replacement up to Zordon, she turns to Kat and actually discusses being a Ranger with her. Kimberly thinks things through and puts her team first.

3 Tommy

Tommy is the longest-running Power Ranger with his place on four different teams. Plenty of fans might think he’s the best the Mighty Morphin series has to offer. Though he does become the leader during the show’s run, Tommy is also very immature and hot-headed when he initially joins the team.

Tommy is a great fighter, but not always the best team player. He learns to be a better team player, and he definitely grows as a leader, but there are two teammates who actually have him beat in both of those areas.

2 Adam

Adam is the second Black Ranger. He’s pretty reserved – initially more observant than talkative. It’s not until the Zeo season that he comes out of his shell more. Adam, however, has some advantages over his teammates.

Like most of them, he’s got experience in martial arts long before getting a power coin. He’s also the one in his friend group who figures out how to get away from the Putties that attack them and help the Power Rangers before he, Rocky, and Aisha ever get powers. Adam grows into his leadership role, becoming Tommy’s second-in-command and going on to mentor new generations of Rangers in later series.

1 Jason

When fans talk about Red Rangers, Jason always comes up as the fan-favorite. The original Red Ranger and leader, Jason makes for some big shoes to fill. Not only is he a capable fighter, but he’s also a capable teacher and the only person who can beat Tommy in single combat.

It’s Jason who spends most of his free time sparring with his teammates, teaching Billy moves, and encouraging Zack’s new techniques. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to never give up and make sure his friends are prepared for the worst. Jason leaves the series for the peace conference with Trini and Zack, but also returns to Angel Grove to become a Ranger again in Power Rangers Zeo. Jason has also returned for Red Ranger team-ups and to help inexperienced teams. He is the epitome of “once a Ranger, always a Ranger.”
