Pokémon Characters Generated By Bot Look Eerily Like The Real Thing

The Pokémon franchise specializes in unusual designs, and a bot has analyzed every single monster in order to create its own creepy creatures.

A group of original Pokémon, automatically designed by an artificial bot, manage to look like actual pocket monsters but with an unsettling twist. The massively popular monster collection series started with a set of 151 creatures, but this has since expanded into an enormous roster of 898 superpowered critters. With the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus possibly introducing Gen 9 Pokémon, the franchise’s line-up of monsters will continue to expand for the foreseeable future.

When the franchise first launched back in 1996, only 151 Pokémon were available for trainers to find, battle, and collect. The first generation’s three starter Pokémon were Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander, and this trio set a precedence for each generation offering three adorable Water, Grass or Fire-type creatures to pick right off the bat. This first batch of Pokémon also included several powerful Legendary Pokémon, including the Legendary Bird Trio, Mew and Mewtwo, with these rare being now acting as a franchise staple. Subsequent generations have gradually added more and more monsters to the mix, with different versions of old Pokémon adding even more variety to the roster. Pokémon Legends: Arceus will add Hisuian forms of classic creatures such as Voltorb, giving these species a dramatic makeover.

While the Pokémon franchise has unleashed many bizarre creature designs over the years, a bot designed by Twitter user Max Woolf has generated its own roster of oddly appropriate pocket monsters. The Buzzfeed data scientist had the artificial intelligence look at every individual Pokémon, and the results aren’t particularly far-fetched. The colorful band of custom creatures are all generally shaped and colored like actual Pokémon, though the placement of their faces is notably odd compared to official designs from the series. Facial features seem to be placed at random, which is uncomfortable, but at a glance, Max Woolf’s collection of knock-off Pokémon could pass for the real thing.

While the series has produced nearly 900 different collectible creatures, even more unused Pokémon designs from past games exist and could be implemented in the future. Throughout the franchise’s history, many creatures have been abandoned, and some of the better concepts could easily be reused by Nintendo. For example, a third Pikachu evolution known as Gorochu was planned for inclusion in the series’ second generation, but it was never designed or implemented. Even more bizarre oddities like a pincushion doll or a shark with an anchor tail could pop up in future installments as well.

For a franchise that runs on unique and sometimes disturbing creature designs, Max Woolf’s Pokémon creations are particularly unsettling. While his bot managed to get the general shape and color of the monsters right, the placement of their faces is simply uncanny. Upcoming installments like Pokémon Legends: Arceus promise to add new pocket monsters and variants of old creatures, but gamers are unlikely to see any of Woolf’s creations pop up in official media.
