Miles Morales Had A Disastrous First Attempt As SpiderMan

Miles Morales took the death of Peter Parker seriously, especially since he blamed himself for not getting involved and potentially making a difference. Looking to make amends and honor Peter’s memory, Miles stepped up and chose to use his new powers to help others as the next Spider-Man. With a store bought Spidey costume, Miles’ first patrol as Spider-Man was an ill-received disaster, with many saying in person and online that it was overall in bad taste.

In the Ultimate Marvel universe, bi-racial Brooklyn teenager Miles also gained his powers from a genetically engineered spider bite. Originally wanting nothing to do with his new abilities or being a Spider-Man, Miles’ plan for a normal life were thrown out when he witnessed Peter’s final battle with his nemesis, the Green Goblin. His best friend and confidant Ganke Lee was not only excited and supportive of the idea of Miles being a hero but also comforting to his upset and guilt-stricken friend, suggesting that Miles had received his powers because the world needed a Spider-Man. Buying Miles his first costume, Miles followed Ganke’s advice and took to the rooftops of New York to give his best shot at being the new Ultimate Spider-Man.

In Ultimate Fallout #4, by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, Miles’ first patrol saw the new Spider-Man interrupt a beating from the Kangaroo, a former Spider-Man villain fresh from prison and looking for to make a quick (illegal) buck. Despite everyone mistaking him for the deceased Peter Parker, Miles ignores being told he’s acting in bad taste and painfully learns why the villain is called the Kangaroo. After being hit and tossed through restaurant windows, Miles gets lucky with his new powers when his venom blast causes the Kangaroo to drop the car he was about to flatten the new wall-crawler with on himself. With the villain defeated and the police on their way, the new Spider-Man leaves the crime scene with a group of witnesses wondering how Spider-Man was still alive. After he was a safe distance away, Miles unmasks and in between breaths and the adrenaline wearing off, he acknowledges that maybe the costume is in bad taste.

The aftermath of this disastrous first battle was explored further in the Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series, which fleshed out more of Miles’ background and origin story. Although he was victorious, he was further pummeled by the news, especially the Daily Bugle, which heavily criticized this new copycat superhero and his apparently bad taste. Commenting that Bugle laid into Peter pretty heavily when he was Spider-Man, this criticism does not deter Miles from going out again where he is confronted with an upset Spider-Woman and later her boss Nick Fury. There’s never a right time to be a superhero but Bendis highlights the bad timing having happened so close to Peter’s funeral by having everyone from bystanders to Nick Fury himself telling Miles that his outfit wont do. The point wasn’t to discourage Miles for his efforts but that he could never properly replace Peter Parker so that he’d have to figure out how to be his own Spider-Man.

Fortunately for Miles, his conversation with Nick Fury at the Triskelion was interrupted by Peter’s old foe Electro, awake from his coma and trying to escape. While he is successful at disabling members of the Ultimates, Miles Morales steps up and helps defeat the supervillain, thus proving himself worthy to Nick Fury. Given a new costume by Jessica Drew herself, who tells Miles to take this seriously, Fury’s encouragement and warning to not waste this opportunity to prove himself confirms that sometimes first impressions aren’t everything and that you never wear Halloween costumes on your first night as a superhero.
