Miles Morales Just Hosted SNL In The Marvel Universe

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30

In the latest issue of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, celebrating 10 years of the iconic Webslinger, Miles gets the chance to host Marvel’s version of Saturday Night Live. Featured in a short story coming from Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Miles is seen performing in the sketch comedy show as part of a story that has the Webslinger talking about the best part of his job. However, while hosting SNL is a pretty cool achievement, that’s not the best thing about being Spider-Man in Miles’ mind.

Along with Lord and Miller, the story comes from Kemp Powers (who will be directing Spider-Verse 2), Jeff Loveness, and Sara Pichelli. “The Best Part” is a short backup story featured after the title’s main story which sees Miles sporting his new spider-suit while also meeting up with his new girlfriend Starling. Besides hosting Marvel’s version of SNL, the story also sees Miles throwing the first pitch at a Brooklyn baseball game, getting support from his New York fans (while making fun of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man), as well as walking through Time Square amongst the surplus of not-so-powered Spider-Men looking to take pictures with tourists (though he offers pictures for free).

Spider-Man canonically hosting SNL is particularly fun and exciting. As Miles recounts his experience in this new issue, he reveals that his jokes didn’t land quite as well as he would have hoped, performing in a sketch where he’s facing “Vulture” – as played by The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone. Hilariously, Miles does think that he would have done better with Akiva Schaffer, but he “quit the show after last season to become a movie star. Sellout.” However, the real Vulture showing up certainly spiced up Miles’ hosting duties, turning his performance into a nutty example of “art imitating life imitating art” as he fought the classic villain, saving Jorma’s Vulture in the process.

While it’s great to see Miles Morales hosting SNL (as well as seeing a version of the show where Jorma and Akiva are still involved), stuff like that is not the best part of being Spider-Man according to Miles. Instead, it’s the small things that can be easily missed, the moments where he can connect with people and make a positive difference. For example: seeing kids becoming inspired to be better thanks to his actions as Brooklyn’s Webslinger.

All in all, “The Best Part” is a super fun story from Lord, Miller, and the rest of the all-star creatives who clearly care about Miles Morales, and it serves as the perfect celebration of the character’s 10th anniversary. Furthermore, becoming an SNL host is just a pretty cool part of Miles Morales’ history.
