Milestones Superman SingleHandedly Ended the Civil War

Spoilers ahead for Icon and Rocket Season One #2!

Icon, Milestone’s Superman pastiche, single-handedly ended the American Civil War, but the average citizen does not know it. In Icon and Rocket Season One #2, on sale now in print and digital, the curtain is pulled back on Icon’s history and readers learn that he has been involved in human affairs for much longer than originally thought.

Icon is one of the most powerful heroes in the Milestone Universe. Like Superman, Icon is an alien from another planet who crash-landed on Earth; only Icon happened to land on a plantation in Georgia in the 1840s. He was found by a slave couple, and when they touched his escape craft, the vehicle reconfigured his DNA, giving him a human appearance. The couple raised him, and over the centuries, he has passed as a human, waiting for his chance to return home. In the present day, he is Augustus Freeman IV, a highly successful defense lawyer in Dakota City. His life changes when Raquel Ervin and her friends attempt to rob his house, forcing Icon to use his powers. Raquel is stunned but feels Icon can do so much more; she challenges him to be the hero the community needs.

Now, in Icon and Rocket: Season One #2, by Reginald Hudlin, Doug Braithwaite, Andrew Currie, Brad Anderson, and Andworld Design, Icon has made good on his promise to clean up and inspire his community. Not everyone is pleased, and in Washington DC, two government agents representing a mysterious agency are discussing Icon. One of them, a man named Benedict Lord, reveals Icon’s secret history: he grew up a slave on the plantation, but his powers proved too much for the overseers, and he led a revolt, burning down the plantation. Icon then declared it a free state, angering the locals even further. They marched on the former plantation, but Icon is easily able to stop them. Deciding to end the problem once and for all, Icon travels to Richmond, Virginia, the Confederacy’s capital, and kills its president Jefferson Davis. Lord, who is also long-lived, revealed he was there and was able to seemingly kill Icon. All of this was later covered up, and no one knows what really happened. Now in the present, he realizes Icon is back and intends to finish the job.

No information is given on Benedict Lord (other than that he’s long-lived like Icon) or the agency he works for, but his revelation that Icon killed the President of the Confederacy and effectively ended the Civil War adds new layers to the character. In the original Icon series, he never uses his powers in human affairs, preferring to keep a low profile. In this reboot, however, there is much more to Icon than readers originally thought—the first issue teased he had a heroic career in the 1920s and now fans learn he helped end the Civil War.

Icon is Milestone’s Superman, and he was able to do something that has eluded the Man of Steel for years: stop a war.
