Ever since making her screen debut in The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005, Mindy Kaling has slowly but surely ascended to become one of the most beloved household names in Hollywood. Kaling not only appeared in more than 160 episodes of the NBC hit sitcom The Office, but she also spent another 117 episodes as the star of her own series, The Mindy Project, from 2012 to 2017.

While Kaling has remained faithful to the small-screen throughout her career, she’s also tallied several film credits over the last 15 years, often lending her distinct voice to animated characters. As she currently films the comedy Lockdown starring Ben Stiller and Anne Hathaway, here’s the best of Kaling big and small screen credits to date.

10 Movie – Ocean’s 8 (2018) 6.8/10

In Gary Ross’ elegant gender-bending heist film Ocean’s 8, Kaling joins the high-powered likes of Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, and Helena Bonham Carter.

The Ocean’s Eleven spinoff film concerns Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) younger sister Debbie (Bullock), who recruits a gang of female thieves to steal a $150 million Cartier necklace from the New York Met Gala Ball. Kaling plays Amita in the film, a jewelry maker who’s forgeries come in handy when pulling off the epic heist.

9 TV – The Mindy Project (2012-2017) 7.4/10

In her most personal big or small screen role to date, Kaling created her own sitcom The Mindy Project in 2012. The series ran on Fox until 2015 before being picked up by Hulu for another two seasons.

Co-starring Chris Messina, Ike Barinholtz, Ed Weeks, Beth Grant, and Xosha Roquemore, the show centers on Mindy Lahiri, an upstart obstetrician/gynecologist who struggles to find a proper balance between the professional rigors of her workplace and the much-needed downtime in her personal life.

8 Movie – The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) 7.1/10

Although she had limited screen time, Kaling left a lasting comedic impression in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the first acting credit of her career. The film also established a long-running relationship between Kaling and costar Seth Rogen, who would both go on to star in This Is the End and The Night Before.

In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Kaling plays Amy, the ex-girlfriend of David (Paul Rudd). When Amy and David accidentally run into each other during a speed-dating event, they pick up their bickering ways and begin to scratch old wounds.

7 The Morning Show (2020) 8.4/10

The most recent TV series that Kaling has joined is The Morning Show, Apple TV’s critically acclaimed drama starring Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carrell, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, and more.

The show is a behind-the-scenes account of what it takes to produce a successful morning television program in America. Kaling plays the role of Audra in three of the first 10 episodes of the series, a news anchor working for the rival morning show Your Day, America. The show has garnered three Golden Globe nods and a Primetime Emmy Award win for Billy Crudup.

6 Movie – Despicable Me (2010) 7.6/10

Kaling has found a niche on the big screen by lending her unique voice to a slew of quirky animated characters. Her first such role came as the voice of Tourist Mom in the inaugural minion movie, Despicable Me.

Despicable Me tracks Gru (Steve Carrell), an evil crimelord secretly plotting the world’s hugest heist. His ploy entails exploiting a trio of young female orphans who look up to him as a father figure. The film spawned two sequels and a spinoff series, as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Animated Feature.

5 TV – Curb Your Enthusiasm (1999-) 8.7/10

Following The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Kaling logged her second acting credit by appearing in an episode of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. She played Richard Lewis’ Assistant in the fifth episode of Season 5.

The second animated character Kaling loaned her voice to was Taffyta Muttonfudge in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2013 Academy Awards.

The story centers on Ralph (John C. Reilly), a hulking video-game villain who wants nothing more than to go against his programming and become a heroic character. As he sets out to realize his dream, Ralph invites unexpected chaos in his residential video-game arcade.

3 TV – It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (2005-) 8.8/10

In 2018, Kaling poked fun at her own image by playing a character named Cindy in the 13th Season premiere of the long-running FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. As the newest member of Paddy’s barroom crew, Cindy has an innate ability to successfully con people out of their personal property.

With Dennis out of the picture, Cindy seems to be accepted by Charlie, Mac, and Dee when she helps them take advantage of local political parties ahead of an election. However, things take a turn for the worse when Mac delivers a freaky sex-doll that resembles Dennis.

2 Movie – Inside Out (2015) 8.1/10

The third and highest-rated animated character Kaling has played to date belongs to Disgust in Pixar’s Oscar-winning coming-of-age story Inside Out. The film also currently ranks #160 on IMDb’s Top 250.

Directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen, Inside Out largely takes place in the mind of Riley, a young girl struggling to deal with her relocation from Minnesota to San Francisco. As Riley adjusts to her new situation, her range of emotions from Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear compete with one another.

According to IMDb, the highest-rated big or small credit Kaling’s career to date happens to be The Office, which ran for nine seasons and 188 episodes from 2005-2013. The series is currently ranked #43 on IMDb’s Top 250 TV shows.
