Mission Impossible The 7 Best Villains In The Franchise According To Reddit

With six films released and more on the way, the Mission: Impossible series of films has a wide roster of villains with various sinister objectives. But looking at Reddit, it’s pretty clear cut which of the villains are held in higher regard than others.

There’s not much middle ground when it comes to defining which M:I villains are the most intimidating, intelligent, and memorable. More interesting yet is how the quality of the film doesn’t necessarily indicate an equally excellent and unforgettable villain.

7 Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott)

Sean Patrick Ambrose of the tonally-off Mission: Impossible II seems to have found his rightful place as the least intimidating of M:I’s villain roster. Very little is memorable about Ambrose, he was just another disgruntled IMF agent who turns evil and wants to, naturally, release a deadly virus.

He’s not even a quotable Mission: Impossible character, he’s just an evil Ethan Hunt. In JS_The_Shroud’s words: “Ambrose was interesting in that he was a doppelganger of sorts for Ethan that had studied him intensely, but was dragged down by the film.”

6 Kurt Hendricks

Played by the late Michael Nyqvist, Kurt Hendricks is bolstered by a great performance, but let down by Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’s otherwise outstanding script. He’s a Russian nuclear scientist turned terrorist who is trying to start a war against the U.S. and his motherland.

It’s all somewhat cliché, but not all think so. JS_The_Shroud makes a different point: “Hendrick was interesting and entirely fresh, but felt disconnected as a character from Ethan.” Little is said of Hendricks on Reddit, but even this user’s complement seems like a stretch. At the very least, Hendricks does come across as one of the more intelligent Mission: Impossible characters.

5 Ilsa Foust (Rebecca Ferguson)

Ilsa Foust was never an outright villain, but she did serve as somewhat of an adversary to Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. She has objectives of her own, and while they may be similar to Hunt’s, they are not the same as Hunt’s.

JamesB312 agrees, saying, “Rogue Nation mixed it up by having Ilsa become something of a foil to Ethan’s antics. She was just as proficient and equally if not more motivated. I mean, half of the things that go wrong for him go wrong because of her actions.” It’s a fair point, Foust gives Hunt and co. more than a few headaches throughout Fallout and, especially, Rogue Nation.

4 Jim Phelps (Jon Voight)

Along with Franz Krieger, one of Mission: Impossible’s best sidekicks, Jim Phelps is a master deceiver. The audience (along with Hunt) is convincingly led to believe he’s a good guy. In reality, he’s the man responsible for the very deaths he is supposedly investigating (after having “survived” the slaughter himself).

Baxterrocky said of Phelps, “I’ll always have a soft spot for Jon Voight, while he didn’t have a great deal of screen time, he orchestrated quite an elaborate and intricate scheme. I just love the original film to bits.”

3 August Walker/John Lark (Henry Cavill)

Double agent John Lark, or, “August Walker,” probably came the closest to actually killing Hunt. He even shows just how easily he could do it during the film’s first act bathroom brawl (where he and Hunt are taking on the fake Lark).

CaptainSharpe made this same point, saying, “Cavill takes this by miles. None of the other villains were really able to go toe to toe as much with Hunt.” JS_The_Shroud agreed, “Lark really nailed being a complement to Ethan’s style, hammer vs. scalpel, keeping both a considerable mental and physical prowess, meaning he’s just a bit ahead of Lane. I’m going with Lark.” The hammer vs. scalpel point is terrific, and probably the best way to compare the two characters.

2 Solomon Lane (Sean Harris)

LightTheFusePodcast made a good point about the importance of longevity. “Solomon Lane has probably become the strongest villain because he’s been able to develop as a character over two movies. Plus I bet he’ll be back again.”

Sean Harris brings gravelly-voiced gravitas to the role of Lane, and it stands to reason the Redditor’s assumption is correct. First appearing in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Lane went on to make an even more fulfilling appearance in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. He’s not dead, and he’ll certainly never reform, so hopefully, audiences soon will get to spend more time with this monster. If Fallout has mistakes to avoid, bringing back Lane isn’t one of them.

1 Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman)

It wasn’t close, Redditors say the late, great, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Owen Davian from Mission: Impossible III is the franchise’s top villain. Baxterrocky says, “Philip Seymour Hoffman had a terrific introduction with a very memorable pre-title sequence. He was menacing and sadistic and uncompromising. Very strong villain.”

The Redditor is mostly referring to Davian’s threat scene, where he details what exactly he’ll do to Hunt and those individuals Hunt loves. Galactic_Wifi says “Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely takes the cake without a doubt.” Another agreeing Redditor, sacred_cow_, said, “Philip Seymour Hoffman, no contest.” No contest indeed.
