MK11 Why Kronika Didnt Restore Mortal Kombat Xs Shinnok

Mortal Kombat 11 introduced a lot of changes to the series, not the least of which being the new antagonist, Kronika. Her ability to turn back time almost makes it seem like there’s nothing she shouldn’t be able to achieve. After all, even if she were to make a mistake, she essentially has unlimited do-overs, right? And in the world of Mortal Kombat even the weakest of fighters could become powerful with unlimited tries, not to mention a Titaness, a being even higher on the totem pole than the Elder Gods.

A recent video featuring Dominic Cianciolo, Story and Voiceover Director for NetherRealm Studios, addresses some of the questions fans have had about Kronika’s seemingly unstoppable time power. In particular, Cianciolo focuses on the limits of Kronika’s powers, especially in relation to major events involving great magic, like Raiden decapitating Shinnok.

In the recent video from Ars Technica featuring Dominic Cianciolo, he explains the limits of Kronika’s powers quite clearly. He says, “Kronika did not restore Shinnok because it was beyond her power to do so. When Raiden decapitated Shinnok at the end of Mortal Kombat X, that act itself was irreversible.” This might come as a surprise to people who aren’t quite familiar with Mortal Kombat lore, as the idea of someone above a group called the Elder Gods having limits seems strange, but to a fan of the series this explanation likely makes sense. After all, this is a game where mortals, gods, and all kinds of beings fight to the death. Since the gods in the series have limits, why shouldn’t someone above them have limits as well?

No One Is All-Powerful In Mortal Kombat

The fact that Kronika can’t simply reverse every important event in the Mortal Kombat timeline is not only good for those like Raiden, who have made many contributions to the balance of good and evil in that universe, but also the canon of the series as a whole. The introduction of time travel has ruined, retconned, and convoluted plenty of stories already. Mortal Kombat could have easily joined their ranks if not for the limits on Kronika’s powers.

Kronika not being almighty doesn’t necessarily mean that the past has gone unaltered though, as Mortal Kombat 11 utilizes her time powers to the fullest, even going so far as to introduce younger versions of characters in the series. What will be interesting to see now, though, is just how much Kronika’s experiments with the timeline will affect future games in the series.
