Mob Enforcer Takes on a Dragon in New AfterShock Series Campisi
Dragons meet mobsters in an awesome new genre mash-up series Campisi: The Dragon Incident from AfterShock comics and the creator of Kaiju Score!

A mob enforcer will take on the most unlikely of targets, a dragon, in a new AfterShock comic series titled Campisi: The Dragon Incident from writer James Patrick, artist Marco Locati, and letterer Rachel Deering. The book will be available in stores and digital August 11th.
Since launching in 2015, AfterShock Comics has brought numerous creator-owned titles such as Miskatonic and I Breathed a Body to eager readers. Creators such as Cullen Bunn, Garth Ennis, and Marguerite Bennett have all published work with the company. Last year, the company published Kaiju Score, a four-issue miniseries by James Patrick and Rem Broo, a genre-mash-up involving a heist set against a giant monster attack. The book was critically acclaimed, and now Patrick returns with another genre mash-up, mixing gangster films such as The Godfather and Goodfellas with fantasy elements, namely dragons!
A press release from AfterShock breaks down both the book’s plot and its main protagonist. The new series from AfterShock will follow Sonny Campisi, a fixer in a mob-controlled neighborhood named Green Village. When a dragon flies into the area, Sonny is tasked with stopping it. Obviously in over his head, Sonny must find a way to bring the dragon down; his quest promises to change the lives of everyone in the neighborhood; Patrick stated that the dragon’s rampage through Green Village will turn up secrets the residents do not wish to confront. Sonny himself will change as a result of the dragon’s attack.
Patrick calls Campisi: The Dragon Incident the “spiritual successor” to Kaiju Score and is quick to state that, just like Kaiju Score, Campisi will be more than a gimmick. Patrick also discussed the book’s influences and cited obvious ones such as mob films like The Godfather; he also said the book would draw on his experiences growing up as an Italian-American in Youngstown, Ohio—a place notorious at the time for mob violence and corruption. He recounted hearing stories as a child of car bombs and gambling spots, which the town was famous for. While Patrick was not a part of the mob scene, it still impacted his life, and he hopes to draw on that as well. Finally, Patrick praised artist Marco Locati, calling his art “amazing” and perfect for the story he wanted to tell.
Genre mash-ups are fun because they take various elements of various genres and put them together in new and exciting ways, and AfterShock looks to continue this trend with Campisi: The Dragon Incident, debuting this August.
