Modern Family 5 Ways The Main Characters Changed For The Better (& 5 For The Worst)

Modern Family gave us dynamic and relatable families for 11 seasons. With Jay Pritchett as the patriarch of the family, his adult children, Claire and Mitchell, were now raising families of their own while making plenty of mistakes along the way.

As great of a job as the Pritchett clan did with their own respective families, not every character changed for the better throughout Modern Family, which could be seen as relatable to the modern-day world. Some grow for the better while others are stuck in their ways.

10 For The Better: Cameron Finally Found His Passion

Reviews on Cameron Tucker are mixed. Some love his outrageously hilarious points of view and demeanor while others cringe at it and thought he made no sense. Nevertheless, haters can’t deny that he finally found his passion for football and found a way to support his family through it.

When Cam and Mitch adopted Lily, Cameron was a little lost. He loved being a dad but what were his passions outside of parenthood? He eventually realized he loved the sport of football more than music and teaching and it eventually led him to a full-on career.

9 For The Worst: Why Didn’t The Writers Let Haley Grow Independently?

It’s no surprise that Haley wasn’t always there for her family and she had selfish tendencies, but what teenaged girl doesn’t? Surprisingly, Haley grew a lot when she was with Andy. She found a career and started thinking deeply but once that relationship was over, Haley went back to depending on her parents and falling back on old habits.

Whether it was Alex, her parents, Gloria, or Dylan, Haley was always leaning on someone. And just when she found her stride, Haley got pregnant, which put her career on other ambitions on hold. It was almost as if the writers wanted Haley to feel idle.

8 For The Better: Jay Grew As A Father And As A Husband

To be fair, all of the characters on Modern Family grew in their own way but we can’t ignore Jay’s glow-up. The man went from being a macho man afraid of intimacy to one of the most rewarding men on a sitcom.

He used to have a hard time connecting to Phil, he used to be ashamed of his son being gay (and he couldn’t stand that his husband was Cam), and he wasn’t always there for his children or his new wife. But by season 11, Jay came full circle. He was a new father to Joe and loved taking care of him and he fully supported Gloria’s desire to work. He also came forward with his approval of his children and their spouses. He truly did come a long way for the better.

7 For The Worst: Was Claire Having Her Midlife Crisis Early?

Modern Family 5 Ways The Main Characters Changed For The Better (& 5 For The Worst)

Claire Dunphy is one of the most relatable moms on TV. She loves her kids but they drive her crazy. She’s an organized person who becomes frantic when her controlled plans don’t go her way. And when things don’t go her way, she has no problem stirring the pot so she comes out on top. Sadly, Claire’s control issues appeared to spiral in later seasons.

Whether it was soon-to-be empty nest syndrome or not, Claire didn’t want her kids at home anymore and then changed her mind when they decided to move out. She begged for a career but when she got the title of CEO for Pritchett’s Closets and Blinds, she quit a few years later. And let’s not ignore all the times she tried to sneak away from Phil. Even in the 11th season’s “Paris”, she was lowkey flirting with an ex-fling. Will Claire ever be content?

6 For The Better: Gloria Found Out She Was More Than Her Looks

There’s no denying that Gloria was easy on the eyes — that was her M.O. for most of the series. But after the birth of her son Joe, Gloria realized she wanted to be more than a stay-at-home mom. She dove into the hot sauce business, which gave her a new sense of identity.

By season 11, she found a late love for real estate and started working with Phil. It was inspiring to see Gloria chase her dreams despite her age and to be the new breadwinner of the family.

5 For The Worst: Manny Is Still A Mommy’s Boy

Before Jay and Joe came around, it was always Gloria and Manny. Gloria coddled Manny because he was all she had after Javier left them. It was because of their dependence on each other that Gloria and Manny found it hard to part ways. He was mature beyond his years but couldn’t quite shake his mom.

It was cute in the first couple of seasons but when he was still struggling with separating from his mom in college, fans knew he was regressing. Even Gloria noticed that Manny wasn’t growing in the final season when he had a one-man show. After Javier invited him on a trip to see the world, Gloria thought it would be a good change for Manny and herself.

4 For The Better: Luke Finally Became Focused On School

Luke Dunphy was the miniature version of Phil. While virtually everyone called him dumb, Phil claimed he was just curious. He loved to create sneaky plans, invent new gadgets with his dad, and explore the unknown. He continued doing this when he reached high school but he, unfortunately, couldn’t grasp his classes.

Luke was lost by his senior year of school and didn’t get into many colleges he applied to. He decided to take a year off to get some work experience and really think about what he wanted to do in life, which ended up being exactly what he needed. He had a good head on his shoulders, matured, and got accepted into school by the final season.

3 For The Worst: Mitch & Cam Never Learn From Their Mistakes

The relationship between Mitchell and Cameron made for hilarious television. The two men were incredibly different but had many similarities bringing them together. However, their relationship had some unpopular opinions by fans because as amazing as they were, they never seemed to learn from their past mistakes.

By season 11, the two were still lying to each other as a form of trickery. Cameron tricked Mitchell into admitting he trashed his clown statue and he didn’t even consult Mitch when he was offered a college coaching job. Likewise, Mich didn’t always express himself as he should. One would assume the two would be more honest and forthcoming by the final season but that didn’t happen.

2 For The Better: Alex Became Less Rigid

As the smartest one in the family, Alex felt a lot of pressure to make something of herself. She loved science and wanted to prove herself in the field and to herself. It was because of Alex’s desire to succeed that she was seen as “less fun” and too serious for the show. Even in her freshman year of college she was still having a hard time letting loose.

It wasn’t until Alex was graduating college that she started letting go, relating more to Haley, and enjoying herself in relationships. It was nice to see Alex leave California for a new work project and start a new romance with Arvin by season 11.

1 For The Worst: Mitchell Is Still A Negative Nancy

What separated Mitch and Cam is that Mitch was more negative and Cameron was a free-spirit. One would think Cam’s optimism and positivity would rub off on Mitch—and it did for a little while—but ultimately Mitch always fell back into old patterns.

He grew a lot in the course of 11 seasons but he still let his anxiety get the best of him and allow his pent-up aggression with Cam to overrule their arguments.
