Gloria Delgado-Pritchett is one of the best characters in Modern Family. She isn’t just consistently funny; she’s also a caring mother who only wants the best for her kids (sometimes a little too much), a veritable badass who never misses a target and knows how much any given amount of “horse” is worth, and she has a rich, fleshed-out backstory – that only continues to expand as the series goes on.

As the most extroverted character, Gloria has been at the heart of some of Modern Family’s funniest episodes. So, Modern Family fans, here are Gloria’s 10 most hilarious storylines, ranked.

10 Forcing the kids to go on a hike for Mother’s Day (Mother’s Day, season 2)

In season 2’s “Mother’s Day,” set on the titular mom-centric holiday, Gloria and Claire force the kids to go on a hike. They usually have to do whatever activity the kids want to do, but on Mother’s Day, they get to choose the activity. The kids constantly complain while they hike through the hills, and Gloria and Claire eventually decide they’ve had enough and ditch the kids, continuing the hike alone.

At the top of the hill, Claire gets Gloria to say something negative about Manny – that she doesn’t like his poetry – which is liberating until she realizes Manny is standing right behind her.

9 Telling Jay she’s pregnant on his birthday (Bringing Up Baby, season 4)

In the season 3 finale, as Mitch and Cam find out they can’t have another baby, Gloria finds out she is having another baby. In the season 4 premiere, “Bringing Up Baby,” she waits for the right time to tell Jay, fearing that he will react negatively.

It’s his 65th birthday and he’s taken out on a fishing trip where Phil accidentally knocks him into the water (twice). When he returns home and Gloria tells him the news, he’s ecstatic. He’d spent the day worrying that he was getting old, and Gloria’s pregnancy gave him a fresh start in life.

8 Refusing to accept responsibility for a car accident (Moon Landing, season 1)

While Jay and Cam are accidentally bumping bare butts in a gym locker room in season 1’s “Moon Landing,” Gloria is seeking legal advice from Mitchell. She claims that in a recent car accident she was involved in, the other driver was at fault. However, Manny has a different version of events, telling Mitch in private that his mother is a terrible driver and she refuses to accept it.

And as the case develops, Gloria continually refuses to claim responsibility for this car wreck – until she crashes her car again and there’s no one else around to blame.

7 Hunting the saboteur who trashed her sauce ad (Thunk in the Trunk, season 7)

An ongoing storyline in the seventh season of Modern Family saw Gloria starting a sauce business, selling jars of her family recipe in grocery stores. In one of those stores, she supplied an ad to put next to a big display of her sauce. It was a cardboard cut-out of Gloria herself, with a mechanical arm blowing a kiss at potential customers.

The cut-out was getting a lot of attention from male shoppers, which made Jay jealous, so he stole the ad and destroyed it. But Gloria didn’t know it was Jay who stole her ad, and she began a relentless hunt for the culprit. When she thought it might be her business rival, Auntie Alice, she made a phone call to put a hit out on her, prompting Jay to come clean.

6 Convincing Jay to go dancing at a salsa club (Treehouse, season 3)

When Jay’s best friend Shorty and his wife Darlene start going dancing at a salsa club, Gloria can’t wait to join them. But Jay hates dancing and he’s worried that he’ll embarrass himself, so he lets Gloria go on her own.

He feels bad and gets Manny and Mitchell to teach him a few salsa moves so that he can arrive at the club and surprise Gloria. Mitch gives Jay a pill that he claims helps him to loosen up when he goes dancing with Cam, and Jay gets really high from it, even though it just turns out to be a baby aspirin.

5 Reciting her ventriloquist act from a Colombian beauty pageant (Yard Sale, season 4)

In the season 4 episode “Yard Sale,” Manny and Luke organize a yard sale on Jay’s driveway to raise money for a charitable cause. While they’re digging through some old stuff, the boys find a ventriloquist’s dummy and it turns out to be Gloria’s. She performed a ventriloquist act at a beauty pageant in Colombia.

Her dummy is called “Uncle Grumpy” and he’s a fusty old man who complains about everything. At first, the family enjoys the show. But when Jay comes out of the house, complaining about the yard sale, dressed in the exact same outfit as Uncle Grumpy, they realize Gloria married her puppet.

4 Holding off Joe’s birth until the end of Manny’s birthday (Party Crasher, season 4)

Gloria is such a loving mother that she’ll hold in a baby to make her other son happy. In the season 4 episode “Party Crasher,” it’s Manny’s birthday and he has a big party planned. This was back when Gloria was pregnant with Joe, and Manny had been feeling neglected, given all the attention the unborn baby was getting – not to mention the attention he’d be getting once he was born.

When Gloria goes into labor during the party, she postpones the birth for as long as she can, so she doesn’t take the spotlight away from Manny. After giving birth to Joe, she tells a jealous Claire, “It was the most painful 20 minutes of my life.”

3 Not wearing makeup to give Jay a taste of his own medicine (The Long Honeymoon, season 6)

Gloria notices that Jay has stopped taking pride in his personal appearance in the season 6 premiere episode, “The Long Honeymoon,” so she decides to give him a taste of his own medicine. Right before dinner with an important client, she comes to the front door with no makeup on. Jay learns his lesson, and tells Gloria he’ll start putting more effort into how he looks.

She’s horrified to come home and find a surprise party waiting in the house, so she rushes out the door. But she’s back in seconds with a stunning dress, perfectly applied makeup and salon-quality hair.

2 Trying to get rid of Barkley (Not in My House, season 1)

In the season 1 episode “Not in My House,” Jay returns from a trip to Vegas with a mannequin of a dog dressed like a butler named Barkley. He thinks that Barkley is really cute and kitschy, and puts him by the front door to hold everyone’s keys, and also to give him a chuckle whenever he comes home.

But Gloria hates Barkley. She despises him. So, she sets out to get rid of him. A few seasons later, in an episode called “Las Vegas,” the family went to Sin City and Gloria had to keep Jay from buying Rebarka, a female version of Barkley.

1 Making up Colombian traditions to teach Jay a lesson (The Kiss, season 2)

Season 2’s “The Kiss” is best known as the episode in which the show responded to criticisms that Mitch and Cam didn’t share an on-screen kiss in the first season, but it also has a great Gloria storyline. Following the passing of her grandmother, Gloria decides to cook some traditional Colombian meals in her honor.

Jay makes fun of her for indulging in the grieving processes of her home country, so she decides to get back at him. He feels bad for cracking jokes about her heritage and offers to help her prepare a meal. She makes up a bunch of traditions, like slapping the meat while yelping out loud, to teach him a lesson.
