Schitt’s Creek Season 2 Premiere Has A Clever Home Alone Easter Egg

Catherine O’Hara was arguably the most well-known actress of the cast before Schitt’s Creek’s success, so it’s no surprise the season 2 premiere included an Easter egg to her famous character from Home Alone. Schitt’s Creek follows parents Johnny (Eugene Levy) and Moira (O’Hara), and adult children David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy) Rose as they take a riches-to-rags turn when they lose all of their wealth to a bad business manager. The Roses are left with their only asset, a small podunk town called Schitt’s Creek that they originally bought as a joke.

O’Hara is notable for her role as Kevin McCallister’s mother, Kate, in the tactical battler that is Home Alone (1990) and its sequel, wherein 7-year-old Kevin is accidentally left at home while his family travels to France for a Christmas vacation. Kate frantically realizes on the plane that they forgot Kevin, sending her on a harrowing journey over the holidays back to her son. The McCallister family has an aloof nature not dissimilar to the Roses, wherein much of the kids’ activities are overlooked and there’s a lack of coherence within the family unit. The Roses learn to overcome their separation as they spend so much time together in Schitt’s Creek, though the McCallisters never seem to really get over the struggles of a large family dynamic.

Moira’s plotline in Schitt’s Creek season 2’s premiere episode, “Finding David,” cleverly references Kate’s conflict in Home Alone. David has run away from home following the previous episode, though the conflict begins with Moira screaming in her notable accent about how her family heirloom crocodile bag is missing. In one scene Moira explains her worries about the bag being “out there, frightened and alone,” which is a clear reference to her character in Home Alone worrying about her son being scared and alone at home. The Easter egg is taken even further when comparing Moira’s crying shrieks when realizing the bag is missing to Kate screaming, “Kevin,” when realizing he was forgotten.

The situation is ironic considering O’Hara’s Mrs. McCallister was worried about the well-being of her son, while her Schitt’s Creek character is worried about the status of her bag that she blames a missing David for stealing. The differences between her characters’ preoccupations also reveal the stark difference between the roles. In season 2, Moira still has very little connection to her children, so worries about her possessions and any remaining wealth like a parent would their child. Kate cares deeply about her children but is stressed out by the holidays, extended family on the trip, and general petty arguments that the children get into at the time.

Though the Schitt’s Creek reference to Home Alone ironically highlights the comparison between O’Hara’s character’s motherly tendencies, the circumstances were still quite different. For one, David, as an adult man, ran away from home, which is less concerning than a 7-year-old, troublesome Kevin being forgotten. Either way, it’s fun when the six seasons of Schitt’s Creek include references to the notable careers of its cast, including more references to O’Hara’s role in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice later in the series.
