Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak – Everything You Should Know About Shogun Ceanataur

Capcom had a new reveal for Monster Hunter Rise in the September Nintendo Direct. Sunbreak will be an expansion upgrade for the game that will introduce a ton of new places, items and most importantly, monsters. The expansion may not be arriving until next year, but Capcom did reveal some information during this year’s Tokyo Game Show. It wasn’t much, but we got a name for the new Elder Dragon, Malzeno, and a chance to see a classic monster coming back — Shogun Ceanataur.

Players who have only come into the franchise through Monster Hunter World may not be familiar with this monster crab. Shogun Ceanataur was first introduced alongside its lower rank sibling, Daimyo Hermitaur, in Monster Hunter 2 and last appeared in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Sunbreak will be Shogun Ceanataur’s first appearance in a newer Monster Hunter game and even though it’s a crab, it has a few tricks in its shell — which is usually a monster skull.

This shell makes it tougher than you think, and hunters will need to be prepared. Weapons without enough sharpness will easily bounce right off most spots, which means you’ll need to fight Shogun Ceanataur head-on, which is usually a dangerous move. However, hammers and hunting horns can easily bash its boney backside and are even capable of cracking and breaking the shell for extra rewards. How tough this will be to do in Sunbreak is yet to be seen. The shell isn’t the only breakable on this crab, but it is the easiest.

Shogun Ceanataur has some mean claws that only get more dangerous when it enrages. It has decent range when swinging them around normally and can do quite a bit of damage to hunters who don’t get out of the way in time. However, once it becomes enraged these claws extend like a praying mantis’ and get even longer, giving it an insane reach. In this mode, they also do significantly more damage. Each claw can be broken but it’s tricky to do and once again, many weapons will bounce right off. In older games, breaking both claws also meant putting Shogun Ceanataur in permanent enraged mode.

The fact that this enemy doesn’t need to turn and face a hunter to move or attack only makes this more dangerous. A hunter may dodge its swipe by rolling to the left or right, but it’s capable of crab walking fairly quickly, and anything in front of its claws will get cut. On top of this, if you’re fighting Shogun Ceanataur in a cave, it can crawl up the wall and onto the ceiling to attack at long range with a liquid stream which, according to an old interview with Shintaro Kojima, is actually urine. This may have come from how lobsters communicate. The Shogun Ceanataur can also spray water while on the ground. It’s a dangerous foe that’s got some great defense and plenty of ways to keep hunters away from its vulnerable areas.

Like many monsters, Shogun Ceanataur also came in a few varieties so we may see an Apex version at some point in Sunbreak. As for its weapons and armor, it’s nothing to write home about if it follows the traditional style of previous games, being simple mail armor with Shogun’s carapace coloring. The weapons, on the other hand, tend to be pretty cool as they’re styled after Ceanataur’s claws. It will be interesting to see what other monsters will be added in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and what other changes are on the way.
