Decades after Mortal Kombat’s introduction in 1993, a modder has finally done the logical thing and made the 2D fighter into a first-person experience. One of the most popular fighting franchises around, Mortal Kombat’s battles have always had their fair share of blood, guts, and weapons. The games grew to another level of infamy early in its life thanks to calls for its ban by misguided parental groups, eventually spawning everything from Hollywood films to Saturday morning cartoons. Even when fighting games started to lose their luster in the 2000s, the team now known as NetherRealm Studios kept pumping out engaging tales of the warriors of Earthrealm battling corrupted forces.

The latest entry in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11, is no stranger to unusual additions that shake up the formula. The developers have added several guest characters from the pantheon of action movies, enabling fights between John Rambo, Robocop, and a more recent version of The Terminator. In that same spirit, NetherRealm also added DLC that harkens back to the original Hollywood interpretation of Mortal Kombat, returning three of the original actors to their roles inside the game for the first time. Needless to say, no one making Mortal Kombat takes it too seriously.

Because of that, it’s easy to see the developers nodding along with modder Ermaccer as he grafts several new camera angles onto MK 11. Those on PC using the mod can get a straight-on view of a 2D fight, which simulates sitting behind someone wearing an enormous hat at a baseball game. They can also get a third-person view of the action from a little higher in the air, which is at least playable. However, the real meat of the mod comes in the middle of the example video, showcasing Scorpion throwing spears in the first-person.

While there are a few graphical glitches in the final implementation, the overall view of the action seems to work surprisingly well. This makes sense, as the mod is an adaption of an existing polished mod for the previous game in the series, Mortal Kombat X. Either way, one could imagine NetherRealm implementing some sort of VR side mode for the first-person view, although the studio would have to avoid the mistakes of its rivals at Capcom. They implemented a first-person fighting mode first in the Switch exclusive Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. The mode was a novelty that didn’t last long, and it also exchanged one-on-one fights for some sort of enemy horde mode. It’s easy to imagine a Mortal Kombat version of the mode having a little more visual panache.

Adding first-person and other alternate viewpoints to multiple Mortal Kombat releases is another impressive feat by the PC modding community. It’s not particularly useful for any tournament players in the crowd, but having complete control of the camera for any game can provide opportunities to capture screenshots of obscure NPCs, find items in the environment hidden by the devs, and generally just squeeze more life out of a beloved game. That kind of extended life is what PC gaming is all about.
