Silent Hill Remake Would Be Hard Due To Fan Expectations Says Creator

In a recent interview, Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama said he believes remaking the original would prove much more difficult than remaking the older Resident Evil entries. Given the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Silent Hill fans remain hopeful for a remake of Konami’s classic survival horror game. Ongoing rumors surrounding the franchise’s potential revival, however, indicate that if the series does return, it will do so as a sequel or reboot of some sort.

The series’ return has been a long time coming and could last a while longer still. To the chagrin of Silent Hill faithful, the last entry hit store shelves in 2012 as PlayStation Vita’s critically panned Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Months before then, the equally disliked Silent Hill: Downpour launched across PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. A bit of light shone in the dark when Konami and Hideo Kojima announced P.T./Silent Hills in 2014; however, a strained relationship between the company and Metal Gear Solid creator culminated in the project’s unceremonious cancellation. Now the question stands – should Konami pursue a remake project for one of the horror franchise’s earlier installments?

In speaking with VGC, series creator Keiichiro Toyama shared his thoughts on the potential of a Silent Hill remake. Toyama told the publication Resident Evil is easier to remake than Silent Hill because the latter’s “gameplay as a concept is a little older.” He expounded further, noting Capcom’s brand could “refine the action,” whereas Konami’s would necessitate that developers “rethink the concept to make it interesting to fans.” Simply polishing the visuals wouldn’t do it justice, Toyama added, before saying games as a whole often prove difficult to enjoy in their original forms as time goes on and mechanics evolve.

Again, there’s nothing to suggest Konami harbors an interest in a Silent Hill remake, but Toyama makes an interesting point. Such an endeavor would require quite the overhaul to bring the originals up to modern standards. Would longtime fans accept drastic changes, even if they were fundamentally best for the project’s overall quality? The answer doesn’t seem readily apparent.

Keiichiro Toyama exited the Silent Hill series over two decades ago, yet his return to horror is already underway. In fact, the game designer’s next project, Slitterhead, looks just as eerie as anything else Toyama has helmed in the genre. The horror-action title debuted during The Game Awards 2021 and is currently in the works at the newly founded Bokeh Game Studio.
