Mortal Kombat 2021 First Look At Kabal In New Poster

Mortal Kombat has officially revealed the live-action design for Kabal in a new poster. The upcoming reboot will bring the popular video game franchise back to the big screen for the first time in over two decades, carrying with it an ensemble of classic characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, Kano, and Jax. Kabal was known to be in the film due to the previous casting reveals, but fans haven’t gotten a proper look at him until now.

Like the games, the new Mortal Kombat movie will pit the champions of Earthrealm against Outworld champions in a tournament for the world’s fate. Newcomer Cole Young will lead the good guys assembled by Raiden, while Sub-Zero looks to be the primary Outworld representative for Shang Tsung. Plenty of the film’s story will also occur outside the tournament, including a significant rivalry plotline between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Most of Mortal Kombat’s roster was revealed in the official trailer, but a new fighter has just entered the ring – Kabal. First introduced in Mortal Kombat 3, Kabal has been both a hero and a villain throughout the franchise. Still, a new poster for the upcoming film tweeted by the official Mortal Kombat Movie account puts him solidly on Shang Tsung’s villainous team of Outworld fighters. The character’s design looks true to the games, complete with Kabal’s iconic mask and fearsome hooked swords.

Kabal can be seen briefly in the Mortal Kombat trailer, though not in any proper shot where his full look is visible. He seems to be on the receiving end of Liu Kang’s signature dragon fatality in one scene, foreshadowing a potential grim end to the character onscreen. Of course, the trailer cuts away before revealing how the fight truly ends. It looks like the new Kabal will be entirely on the side of evil, and it will be interesting to see if he has any connection to Kano in the reboot as he does in the games.

Some fans have complained that more minor Mortal Kombat characters like Kabal shouldn’t be included in the film when Johnny Cage isn’t in it since he is a much more central figure to the games’ story. However, it looks like Kabal will play a relatively minor role, primarily giving Outworld one more combatant to even the playing field against Earthrealm. It should be exciting to see Kabal and the rest of the cast take to the fields of battle when Mortal Kombat releases on April 16.
