A large number of Mortal Kombat players agree that Mortal Kombat 2’s logo and artwork are the series’ best. Graphically designed by John Tobias, Midway’s fighting game sequel made its debut in the arcades, like its predecessor, before bringing the bloody battles to home consoles. Warning players that “nothing can prepare you” in its promos, Mortal Kombat 2 continued to pave the way for the series to be a commercial success.

When Mortal Kombat 2 first appeared in the arcades, it welcomed fighting genre fanatics with more improved features than its predecessor, including better graphics and gameplay, a bigger roster, and new finishers, like Friendship and Babality. MK2’s higher quality features could contribute to why it is still appreciated by players. One fan even showed his appreciation by modding Mortal Kombat 2 into the DOOM engine.

As seen on the game’s subreddit, many Mortal Kombat players agree that the logo and art for MK2 are the best in the series’ history. Reddit user CrooklynKnight posted their opinion on the subreddit and many agreed. Along with agreeing that MK2’s logo and art are superb, the users also gave much appreciation to the characters, soundtrack, and overall atmosphere of the game. One commenter likened the image of the artwork that CrooklynKnight posted to that of a movie poster.

MK2’s logo and art were created by Mortal Kombat’s co-creator, John Tobias. The Chicago native was the main artist for the franchise’s early games until leaving Midway in 1994. An Art Institute student, Tobias’ original plan was to be a comic book artist before teaming with Ed Boon to create the first Mortal Kombat game. After the success of the first game, both men would team up again for MK2 and introduce now-familiar characters, such as Jax, Shao Khan, and Mileena, with her terrifying mouths, to Mortal Kombat’s roster. Before crafting the realms of Mortal Kombat and the fighters that inhabit them, Tobias worked on Williams Electronic Games’ Smash TV. Tobias was also the artist for the pack-in comic that was included with the special editions of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

While the predecessor will always be credited for being the starting point of a fighting game phenomenon, MK2 was the game that approved on the model. CrooklynKnight’s post reminded many on the subreddit that MK2 was just as visually appealing as it was fun to play. It is hard to imagine how much of an impact Mortal Kombat would have today if Tobias’s artistic touch was not used in the early games of the series.
