Moto G Power (2022) Vs Moto G Power (2021) Do You Need To Upgrade

Motorola creates a large majority of the budget smartphones available in the U.S., and two of its most affordable options are the Moto G Power (2022) and G Power (2021). More often than not, flagship smartphones take up much of the conversation in the tech space. They’re big, powerful, exciting, and cost a heap of money. They’re undoubtedly fun to talk about, but they also aren’t the phones everyone’s buying.

For a lot of folks, the best smartphone is the one that costs as little as possible. Buying the latest iPhone or Galaxy sounds like a good idea until you look at the $1000+ price tag. That’s where budget handsets — like the Moto G series — shine. The Moto G Power (2021) launched in January 2021 as a fairly decent $199 smartphone. A few months later, however, Motorola announced the Moto G Power (2022) for the exact same price. If you bought the 2021 Moto G Power and wonder if the 2022 model is a necessary upgrade, here’s a closer look at everything you need to know.

Let’s start with the design of the two phones. The Moto G Power (2021) has a smooth plastic construction back and a hole-punch cutout in the left corner of the display. The Moto G Power (2022) is also made of plastic, but it opts for a textured backside with a centered hole punch. Both phones have an IP52 dust/water resistance rating, 3.5mm headphone jack, and expandable storage. There is a fingerprint sensor on both phones as well, but its placement is different. The Moto G Power (2021) has its sensor embedded into the power button, whereas the 2022 model has its fingerprint sensor in the Motorola logo on the back.

Moto G Power (2022) Has A Few Big Spec Upgrades

There are more substantial differences when it comes to specs — starting with the display. The Moto G Power (2021) has a 6.6-inch screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, while the Moto G Power (2022) has a slightly smaller 6.5-inch display that goes up to 90Hz. Both phones have the same 1600 x 720 resolution, but the added fluidity of the 2022’s screen is a substantial upgrade. Another major difference is seen with the processor. The Moto G Power (2021) uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset. Its successor, however, features a MediaTek Helio G37. Both processors are on the lower end of the spectrum, but at least in the U.S., developers generally optimize their apps and games better for Qualcomm chips more often than MediaTek ones. That’s not to say the G37 is a bad processor by any means, but it’s still something to consider.

The Moto G Power (2022) has a clearer advantage for RAM and storage — offering 4GB of RAM and a choice between 64 or 128GB of internal space. The 2021 Moto G Power has 3GB of RAM for its base model and comes in 32 or 64GB storage flavors. Elsewhere, the phones are fairly similar. Regarding cameras, the Moto G Power (2022) dons a 50MP primary camera, 2MP macro camera, and 2MP depth sensor. The Moto G Power (2021) has a slightly lower 48MP primary camera with the same 2MP secondary sensors. Both phones also share an 8MP selfie camera, 5000 mAh battery, 10W charging, Bluetooth 5.0, and LTE data speeds (no 5G here). The final key difference has to do with software. The 2021 Moto G Power is currently running Android 11 with no planned updates beyond that. The newer 2022 Moto G Power ships with Android 11 and will eventually get an update to Android 12.

So, what does all of that mean for you? If you have the Moto G Power (2021) and are still happy with how the phone’s running, there’s no need to rush out and get the Moto G Power (2022). The 90Hz display and newer software are nice, but if the 2021 model doesn’t have any issues, feel free to keep using it until you’re actually ready for an upgrade. If it’s been a few years since you’ve upgraded your phone, however, the extra perks of the 2022 Moto G Power make it worth buying over the 2021 model.
