MSI Stealth 15M Who Should Buy New Intel Ultraportable Gaming Laptop

First announced at CES 2021, Intel is partnering with major brands like MSI, ASUS, and Acer to deliver the first of a brand new series of ultraportable gaming laptops. These laptops focus on delivering gaming and content creation performance in a thinner and lighter form than ever before. The MSI Stealth 15M is one of the very first to release and definitely pushes the envelope on what’s possible in such a small form factor.

The Stealth 15M boasts some impressive specs. It features a 15.6-inch full HD screen running at a fast 144Hz refresh rate. It’s powered by the new Intel Core i7-11375H CPU, a quad-core CPU with hyperthreading support that’s able to boost all the way up to 5GHz while only being rated for 35 watts of power. That’s paired with 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB PCI-e ultrafast performance. What separates it from a traditional ultrabook, however, is its dedicated Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card. With Resizable BAR enabled, MSI expects performance to rival last generation’s RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU. Even with these impressive specs, the laptop weighs only 3.75 lbs and comes in at 0.6 inches thin. The Razer Blade Stealth, in comparison, is nearly a pound heavier and is 0.78 inches thin, despite featuring the same screen dimensions and similar specs.

Intel has published a deep dive into the new MSI Stealth 15M on its official site and it’s clear that this is a notebook designed to please multiple audiences. The small form factor and premium components allow it to compete with high-end productivity laptops and offer more than enough performance for getting work done during the day. Likewise, the laptop also offers excellent connectivity options with Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Type-C and Type-A ports, a MicroSD card reader, and a 4K60 HDMI output for external displays, as well as WiFi 6 wireless networking. The Stealth 15M doesn’t stop there, however, as the upgraded graphics card, 1TB SSD, and high-refresh-rate screen also open the door to 1080p gaming and content creation. The RTX 3060 GPU won’t run modern games at their highest settings, especially with ray tracing on, but is a middle-ground between price, performance, and thermal performance. In short, this is for the user who wants a little bit of everything: gaming, portability, and productivity.

Does the Market Need Ultraportable Gaming Notebooks?

The laptop market has chased the thin and light design for years, so it raises the question of whether ultraportable gaming laptops are even necessary at this point. According to the research presented in its deep dive, Intel certainly thinks so. In fact, its polling indicated that nearly all gaming laptop owners use their devices for a mix of different tasks and 39 percent craved something thinner and lighter. Of those polled who didn’t purchase a gaming laptop despite desiring similar high-spec features, an additional 38 percent attributed their choice to weight.

Gaming laptops have done a good job of shrinking down over the years but the MSI Stealth 15M is a strong indicator that there is still room to grow. The difference in size may not seem like much on paper but is easily felt when carried through the day. If Intel’s polling is accurate, this new category of gaming laptops should prove quite popular. With more than 40 ultraportable gaming notebooks planned for the first half of 2021, it will certainly be an industry development worth keeping a keen eye on.
