The new console generation has already seen a wealth of racing games trying to make use of the upgraded technology. After all, increased visual fidelity and the ability to have a higher, more stable frame rate are much-wanted aspects for racing fans, with games like DIRT 5 already proving themselves at home with new-gen updates. The latest title to make the step up is MXGP 2020 from developer Milestone.

Initially released at the tail end of 2020, MXGP 2020 stands as the official FIM Motocross World Championship title. It’s an important game for the motocross community, with a level of authenticity that fans thrive on. Milestone’s expertise with two-wheel racing is also put to good use, with the studio also behind the Monster Energy Supercross and MotoGP games, and the fan favorite RIDE franchise.

The PS5 version of the game does have some noticeable upgrades over the one that released last year. Chief among these is the improvement seen to its graphical quality, with a level of clarity that enhances the experience in spite of the muddy terrain. It’s something that will no doubt be appreciated by players, given that this can make all the difference within the genre.

That said, MXGP 2020 perhaps doesn’t make the most out of the extra fire power the PS5 provides. In part this is down to the limitations of the title as a whole, with little variation in terms of locale in comparison to other racing games that have made the leap to current gen. Certainly when standing next to even the last generation version of DIRT 5, MXGP 2020 looks a little bland.

Little changes by way of the title’s gameplay, of course. MXGP 2020 is still a challenging and enjoyable motocross game, and players will need to get to grips with its physics engine quickly in order to master its intricacies. A lack of a tutorial may put off newcomers, although with some perseverance users will understand what’s required by way of shifting the weight of their bike to climb the ladder.

It’s fair to say that MXGP 2020 can get a little repetitive however. Although a variety of game modes are included, such as the core single player career mode alongside things like championship and individual grand prix racing, the core gameplay remains similar across all of them. Thankfully some variation can be found via a track editor and the freedom of the open Playground mode, but nonetheless this might hold back intrigued freshmen to the genre from taking the plunge.

There is something that might make players sit up and notice, and once again it’s thanks to the new features of the PS5. The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback makes the world of difference to the overall feel of the game, particularly the friction found when getting up steep hillsides, and once more showcases how Sony’s controller is something of a game changer. Although MXGP 2020 doesn’t reach the levels of use that WRC 9 does with DualSense compatibility, it’s still a welcome change.

Overall, MXGP 2020 is an exciting racing game that manages to be just soft enough on its sim qualities to stop it from being entirely foreign to newcomers. Nonetheless, the game showcases some of the issues seen in annual releases, such as a lack of progression and a concentration of play into specific game modes. In spite of this, visual improvements and its uptake of the DualSense controller does make MXGP 2020 a worthwhile entry for a motocross fan’s PS5 library.
