The popularity of My Hero Academia is not limited to its range of well-developed characters nor the jawdropping fight sequences, but the fact that the stories are imbued with pathos — from All Might’s universal love for the world to Shoto’s painful childhood to Mirio Togata’s unadulterated selflessness when faced with saving a child or losing his powers.

Interestingly, the characters cry a lot in this show, more so than most shonen anime, because the narrative focus relies on relationships and the emotions that are spent in maintaining them. That being said, having to choose which moments hit the audience hardest is not an easy task, but there are some that would make even the hardest of hearts melt.

10 Bakugo Getting Kidnapped

Given Midoriya’s complicated friendship with Bakugo (to an outside observer, it looks quite abusive), it’s a powerful moment to watch the latter as he’s abducted by the villain Overhaul, aided by Kurogiri’s teleportation.

Further, it’s one of the rare times that Bakugo himself asks Deku not to follow him, suggesting that he knows none of them have a chance of saving him at that point in time. Midoriya picks up on this emotional change instantly, which just upsets him more.

9 When All Might Officially Transfers His Power

All Might offers Midoriya his Quirk early on in the series, which confuses the protagonist more than anything else. Besides, having to go through all the stress of training puts his mind off the inevitable transfer for a long time.

Finally, All Might decides that Deku is ready for the inheritance of ultimate power, and demands that his protege eat one of his hairs. Post the comical scene, they both break down, having realized the consequences of the event for both of them. In fact, All Might even asks Midoriya to stop crying, as he usually does, except that he’s weeping at the same time.

8 Deku Vs. Bakugo

There are too many of these instances to count, with most of them ending with Bakugo insulting Deku and walking away in a huff. However, when they are paired together against All Might, only Midoriya attempts to keep their so-called enmity aside, claiming that they would not be able to pass the final gate without a truce, temporary or otherwise.

It takes a lot of effort from both sides, and All Might almost manages to hold Bakugo back, but Deku appears from nowhere and frees him, carrying him across by himself.

7 Midoriya Convincing Todoroki To Go All Out

Todoroki Shoto absolutely refuses to use the fire aspect of his Quirk (a form of protest against his father), which doesn’t make much of a difference to him in most earlier fights, given that his ice abilities are already overwhelming.

Against Midoriya, however, this does not seem like an option, but it’s quite a shock for him and the audience when Deku starts exhorting him to release his full powers, that holding himself back would hurt nobody other than himself. The fact that this succeeds is a testament to Midoriya’s inspiring personality.

6 1,000,000% Smash

To save little Kota, and restore his trust in the goodness of heroes, Midoriya attacks Muscular head-on, not knowing what he’s getting himself into. The hero, exhausted from his recent regimen, uses his 100% twice, but neither of them has a lasting impact on the villain.

However, Kota responds by distracting Muscular with a mild water attack, which does zero damage (obviously) but is responsible for triggering the sole fragment of hope within Deku. Midoriya then takes the One For All all the way up to one million percent, and utterly annihilates Muscular, instantly transforming despair into victory.

5 Endeavor’s Domestic Abuse

The reason Todoroki hates his father, Endeavor, so much is because the latter has always abused his family (with the goal of producing an heir who could take on All Might and win.)

To that end, a few flashback scenes show him punching a very young Shoto in the stomach, as well as taking his anger out on his poor wife. What’s worse is that after his mother throws boiling water at his face, Endeavor tells Shoto that he “put her in the hospital” for what she did to him. Agonizing doesn’t begin to describe it.

4 Lemillion’s Sacrifice

In his final bid to save Eri from one of the worst father figures in existence, Mirio Togata takes on a nearly invincible opponent, Overhaul. At first, Lemillion’s masterful control over his phasing Quirk looks like it’s getting the better of the villain, even landing a few punches.

Sadly, Nemoto fires a Quirk Erasing Bullet at the little girl, which Mirio bravely and happily accepts on her behalf, thereby losing his Permeation. It’s not over yet, though, as Lemillion still succeeds in holding Overhaul off until the rest of his team join the fray.

3 Sir Nighteye Passing Away

Nighteye’s injuries turn out to be too difficult to heal, even for the best medical teams in the country. This upsets Lemillion and Deku beyond words, as can be seen from the beautifully poignant scene in the hospital room at their mentor’s deathbed.

It’s heartbreaking to say the least since Nighteye admits that Midoriya is indeed worthy of the All For One, a drastic change of opinion. He also convinces Mirio that his fate has great things in store for him, before passing away calmly.

2 United States Of Smash

The battle between All Might and All For One is legendary, not because of the techniques used or the destructive outcome, but because the hero reverts into his weakened form, Toshinori Yagi, right before his opponent is brought down.

Regardless, he remembers his own teacher, Nana Shimura’s words, before focusing every bit of his Quirk into his right arm. All Might hurtles towards his mortal enemy, practically blowing him away with the single most powerful moment in the series — the United States of Smash. With this, he retires forever.

1 Little Midoriya Learning Of His Quirklessness

Midoriya is extremely excited about what his Quirk is going to be, as is evident from his hero-worship of both All Might and Bakugo. However, when he exhibits nothing indicating any unique talents, he is taken to a doctor who explains that he would remain Quirkless (due to having a double-jointed little toe, apparently.)

After they reach home, Deku goes on to binge his favorite scenes of his favorite hero, and mournfully questions if he could save other people despite his disadvantage. This moment is, without question, the most emotional in the narrative to date.
