My Hero Academia All Mights Era of Peace Is a Brutal Lie

Warning! Spoilers ahead for My Hero Academia Chapter 314!

My Hero Academia has portrayed its world of heroes and superpowered quirks as having found balance in All Might as a symbol of peace, but chapter 314 suggests that there’s been a dark secret behind this story for years.

Back in chapter 299, Hawks’ origin revealed that he had originally been picked up as a child to perform secret missions for the government’s Hero Public Safety Commission. He was trained as a hero through them, rather than attending a hero school like U.A. and mostly acted behind the scenes, infiltrating organizations like the League of Villains. As it turns out, Lady Nagant was also used by the HPSC, but her tasks were even shadier than those given to Hawks. The HPSC’s only true concern was maintaining the public’s faith in the heroes, regardless of the cost, which led to Lady Nagant being assigned to assassinate heroes who had caved to corruption, killing innocent protesters and dangerous villains alike. This is said to have been going on for decades, and Nagant wasn’t even given an option to back out, as they threatened to have her killed as well.

Where this story starts to raise some uncomfortable questions is that if the HPSC’s dark deeds had been going on for years, and the characters who perpetrated them like Nagant and Hawks are still alive, then these things must have taken place during All Might’s reign of peace. While people like Midoriya and Bakugo looked up to All Might for terrifying villains and dissuading people away from crime, there was actually something much darker going on, designed to remove those who weren’t intimidated from the equation entirely. This era of peace wasn’t due exclusively to All Might’s influence, but also in part to a government agency that was disappearing people who might have poked holes in the illusion of heroes. While Hero Killer Stain might finally have broken through and gotten that message out to the world, how many tried before him, only to be taken out by assassins like Nagant?

One has to wonder at this point just how much awareness the pro heroes of the time had of this situation. It’s hard to believe that All Might and others would hear stories about other heroes being assassinated without looking into it; after all, the war with All for One was still going on behind the scenes, too. How could All Might possibly be sure that this hero wasn’t killed by All for One for his or her quirk? And, no matter how perfect the HPSC’s covers, heroes with resources that the general public didn’t have access to would be most able to discover the truth. All Might in particular would have had the analytical mind of Sir Nighteye on his side, who was especially unlikely to miss details like this. To draw a real-life comparison, even the most dubious acts of the CIA are discussed in conspiracy circles online, and some of their misdeeds are so publicly known that they even have Wikipedia pages.

For the public not to know is one thing, but the heroes who are closely involved with the HPSC’s victims would undoubtedly have caught on. How could All Might not have known about this, and if he did, how could he have continued to allow it to happen? Lady Nagant gives her disgust with the HPSC’s actions as a reason for siding with All for One, claiming that at least All for One is honest about the world he hopes to create. It’s perhaps the most relatable motive for a villain in My Hero Academia yet, and it’s sure to leave Midoriya with some tough questions on his mind after the fight.
