My Hero Academia Bakugo Finally Returns To Aid Deku

Warning! Spoilers ahead for chapter 318 of My Hero Academia!

In My Hero Academia’s latest chapter, Bakugo Katsuki just came out of nowhere to save Deku from a swarm of civilians under the control of the assassin Dictator. This is the first time that Bakugo or any of the other U.A. students have appeared in My Hero Academia ever since Deku left on his solo mission to lure All For One out of hiding.

Ironically, the scene in question mirrors the last time Bakugo and Deku spoke, proving that Deku should have heeded Bakugo’s last piece of advice. Near the end of the Paranormal Liberation War, Deku had already been overwhelmed with a feeling of responsibility. As the wielder of One For All, he felt that the duty of defeating All For One fell on his shoulders and endeavored to do so. But right when All For One took over Shigaraki’s body, Deku froze, giving the villain an opening to attack. Deku would have most likely died had Bakugo not intercepted the assault, and as Bakugo fell from the sky, in tatters, he was able to utter the words: “Don’t go playing hero by yourself.”

In the present day, Deku has already gone out on his own and defeated two assassins, each of whom All For One had tasked with collecting the young hero so he could obtain his coveted One For All quirk. And by chapter 318, Deku comes across the third and latest assassin, Dictator, whose Despot quirk allows him to control others. Although Deku quickly thinks of a plan by the time Dictator forces a number of civilians to attack, Deku is easily overwhelmed. But at the last moment, Bakugo barges out of nowhere and unleashes his AP Shot on the assassin, saving Deku yet again.

Ironically, Deku is attempting the very thing that Bakugo told him not to do during their last encounter: Being the hero all by himself. In so doing, Deku is risking his life and playing right into All For One’s hands just like before. This already looks bad on its own because it proves that Deku didn’t heed his friend’s advice even though he would have undoubtedly benefited had he done so. But in yet another ironic turn, Deku’s failure to learn from his mistake is once again forcing Bakugo to save Deku.

This is a lesson that Bakugo has been struggling with himself throughout the majority of My Hero Academia, and even though Deku is obviously the level-headed one of the two, Bakugo learned it first. Until recently, Bakugo had been a lone wolf who despised collaborating with others and actively worked against his teammates, usually resulting in all of them failing. It isn’t until a seemingly worthless class exercise that Bakugo finally discovers the importance of teamwork. The fact that Bakugo is trying to teach this lesson to Deku is a testament to their ever-evolving relationship. Originally, Bakugo bullied Deku when he had no powers and later actively tried to break Deku’s resolve to become a hero once the latter acquired One For All. Deku’s determination to become a hero despite being born quirkless infuriated Bakugo and this fury only grew when U.A. later accepted Deku as a student. Bakugo’s latest actions are just further proof of how much he’s grown as a character in My Hero Academia, where he not only realizes Deku can be a great hero but actually helps him achieve his dream.
