My Hero Academia Midoriya Is Getting An Unlikely TeamUp

Since the start of My Hero Academia, protagonist Izuku Midoriya and his childhood best friend Katsuki Bakugo have always had a rocky relationship. Not necessarily rivals, but not friends anymore either, the two have a complicated alliance. Though the hostility has always come from Bakugo’s side, recent chapters of the series have shown this young hero-to-be in a more wholesome light. It could be the two are finally working towards a more cooperative dynamic. However, that doesn’t seem to be the present case in the upcoming Shonen Jump series, My Hero Academia: Team-Up Mission Vol 1.

MHA has had its fair share of spin-off series, from Vigilantes to My Heroine Academia. The title of this new manga addition is a tribute to a team-focused new program (T.U.M) introduced by pro-hero All Might. It will follow the UA students as they begin to embark on missions as a part of this program. Volume 1 will specifically focus on an unlikely team-up between Midoriya and Bakugo. To make matters even more complicated, the pro-hero in charge of the team may come as a shock.

With the plot of this release so heavily focused on the relationship between Midoriya and Bakugo, as well as the insinuation that this is their first-ever mission, new readers can assume Team-Up Mission is set before more recent MHA updates within the main series. While they may not be a perfect team just yet, the two have made great strides in their relationship, even protecting each other at their own risk. This blast-from-the-past feeling will be a refreshing content break following a heartbreaking end to one of MHA’s most dramatic arcs yet.

Friendly(ish) competition aside, the new series could provide a platform for many long-awaited match ups between characters who have not been seen within the original MHA series just yet. Fans of the manga have asked for team-ups between every UA character/pro-hero possible. The release of Team-Up Mission could be exactly what the MHA franchise needs to explore new relationships and character dynamics that have not been able to find the place to develop just yet.

While Midoriya and Bakugo have been at the center of the series since its launch, the new series may provide readers with more of the wholesome content featured in recent chapters. With so much tragedy occurring in the main series, the first volume of this spin-off will be a nice break for My Hero Academia fans that want to see more from their favorite characters without the intense drama and emotion that accompanies the main series.
