My Hero Academia Vigilantes Exposes The Nomus Secret

The monstrous Nomu of My Hero Academia are mostly known for being the villains’ brainless minions, all muscle and no thought. But it’s also established that not all Nomu are mindless, with one particularly prominent character having already been revealed as a Nomu. Chapters 99 and 100 of spin-off series My Hero Academia Vigilantes have begun to show exactly why All for One moved from the smarter, self-motivated kind to the brawn-without-brains variety.

The main villain of Vigilantes has been Number Six, a mysterious figure who emerged from Naruhata’s Villain Factory group and has continued to operate alone. He’s been quite devious, masquerading as an ordinary person named Rokuro Nomura and as a Pro Hero named Rock in order to achieve his as-yet-unclear goals. From his memories and accounts of his past, Number Six seems to have been created and imbued with the high speed quirk he uses, which is known to have been stolen by All for One. As a villain, Number Six possesses a bomber cell-based quirk as well as one that manipulates electromagnetic waves, which can ignite the bomber cells from afar. In the most recent chapters, Number Six has been utilizing mindless “Anonymous” beings, made up of bomber cells, to cause chaos throughout Naruhata.

Keen readers have noted many parallels with the story of Kurogiri in the parent series, who was dramatically revealed to be the reanimated corpse of Aizawa’s school age friend, given the warp gate quirk by All for One. Kurogiri is from one of the earlier batches of Nomu, which retained more intelligence and individuality than those seen elsewhere in the series. Number Six also seems to be an early Nomu, something that he’s not particularly subtle about—the name “Rokuro Nomura” obviously contains both the term “Nomu” as well as Six (roku in Japanese). But while even Kurogiri has programming and restraints that prevent him from being interrogated, Number Six hasn’t shown many limitations on his behavior at all. Indeed, the entire plan he’s enacting appears to be entirely his own creation, rather than orders from All for One.

As a rogue Nomu, Number Six poses a lot of problems for both the heroes and his villainous creators. If there’s one thing All for One demands, it’s obedience and loyalty, and that’s a trait that Number Six distinctly lacks. Much of Number Six’s drive comes from a desire to prove himself, since his spontaneous creation left him without a past. He’s both vain and narcissistic, and one of his key obsessions has been besting the original owner of his High Speed quirk, even when it puts his own plans at risk. He also holds grudges and can be goaded into making mistakes out of ego.

It’s not hard to see why these behaviors and traits would make Number Six a rather poor minion for Al for One. It may be that the only way to create more obedient Nomu was to eliminate their ego, and their intelligence along with it. The more autonomy a Nomu is given, the more likely it is that they might rebel or betray the person they’re meant to be taking orders from, something that All for One wouldn’t stand for. Kurogiri may represent an intermediate step, where some intelligence is retained at the cost of strict and difficult programming, while these “Anonymous” bombers are extreme to the opposite end, having even less drive than a Nomu. No doubt more of Number Six’s past will be revealed in coming chapters of My Hero Academia Vigilantes, as his grand plan continues to play out.
