My Hero Academias New Traitor Has a Shocking Similarity to Deku

Warning: Contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 336

Fans of My Hero Academia can finally confirm the identity of the U.A. traitor, and it is not who they expected. In a shocking twist in chapter 336 of the manga, the traitor was revealed to not be Toru Hagakure (Invisible Girl) as it was heavily implied at the end of the previous chapter, but rather Yuga Aoyama.

The theory of the U.A traitor has been heavily debated for years among fans of the series. Very early in the manga, villains invaded a training exercise for the young heroes, rousing suspicions that there was a traitor amongst either the students or the staff of U.A. Many readers collected hints dropped by author Kōhei Horikoshi and came up with a list of suspected traitors, with the most plausible names being those of Aoyama, Hagakure and Denki Kaminari. The final panel of chapter 335 showed an image of Invisible Girl, while in the background the villain All for One was talking about his “friends” inside U.A. High, making everyone assume he was referring to Toru. And everyone fell for it.

Chapter 336 showed Invisible Girl hiding in the woods, listening to a heart-breaking conversation between Aoyama and his parents. It was revealed that All For One is blackmailing the family, thus forcing Yuga to act as his spy and saboteur inside U.A. High. He was the one who helped the villains infiltrate the U.S.J. exercise and later revealed the location of the forest training camp. The reason why All For One holds sway over the Aoyama family is perhaps the most shocking reveal. Yuga was born without a quirk, exactly like the series protagonist Deku. When he was a kid, afraid that he would not fit into a society dominated by super-powers, his parents asked All For One to give young Yuga a quirk, thus falling under the villain’s influence.

In one plot twist, Horikoshi demonstrated that he was well aware of the fans’ theories on the traitor and that he could play with them to ensure maximum effect. Also, he pushed his story in an unexpected direction. While Aoyama may not be the most fearsome opponent for Deku, his significance as the traitor goes well beyond that. Like Deku, he was born without a quirk and later obtained one. Midoriya got his powers from All Might, the greatest force of good, while Aoyama got his from All For One, the personification of evil. Both characters’ stories are representative of the dark side of the superhero society shown in My Hero Academia: in a world where everyone is “special”, being born “normal” is the greatest sin. The different paths they took are mostly due to the influence of their parents. Midoriya’s relationship with his mom was fundamental in shaping his heroic attitude, while Aoyama’s parents pushed their son into the hands of All For One, even if they believed they were acting for his own good.

It will be interesting to see what Deku’s reaction to this revelation will be. Hagakure led him to the place where the Aoyama family was conspiring, and he heard the truth from Yuga himself: “I am a scumbag villain.” How will Midoriya face this dark reflection of his own past? Fans of My Hero Academia will have to wait for the next chapter to find out.
