Creator of the My Hero Academia manga Kohei Horikoshi shared a new sketch on Twitter showing off the series’ villains as they celebrate Halloween, and the team has never seemed to be having quite so much fun before.

My Hero Academia’s villains stepped into the spotlight this year as the anime adaptation took on the “My Villain Academia” arc, which moved the focus from the hero students over to the League of Villains, as they performed their own training regimen. Despite their prominence in the anime currently, many of the villain characters have had little role in the manga this year, with several of them dead or in hiding after the Paranormal Liberation War arc, which concluded in early 2021. Even Tomura Shigaraki, the most prominent member of the League, has undergone some major changes which have led readers to question if he can even be considered the same character anymore.

Horikoshi’s sketches are often more detailed than what one would typically consider a “sketch,” and that’s certainly the case here. The image depicts the core villains Shigaraki, Dabi, Mr. Compress, Twice, Himiko Toga, and Spinner, who mostly seem to be in good spirits, aside from Spinner sulking in the back. Shigaraki and Toga in particular seem to be outright dancing, and the former’s pose is a bit reminiscent of the famed creatures of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. Dabi also stands out since he doesn’t appear to be walking, but rather standing and glaring through the fourth wall, as if to remind readers that he has a very different agenda that’s still at work. It’s also interesting to note that the villains are wearing their usual outfits rather than Halloween costumes.

The relationships between the villains have been one of My Hero Academia’s strengths, making them just as fun to follow as the protagonists. While villain team-ups in comics often end with the bad guys at each other’s throats, the members of the League have managed to find friendship and belonging with these other outcasts from society, building real bonds that mirror those amongst the heroes, as highlighted by the My Villain Academia arc. Their absence in the manga as of late hasn’t gone unnoticed as a result, so in that sense this sketch from Horikoshi is a bit of a breath of fresh air, a reminder of simpler times for both the series’ world and the readers alike.

With the My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission movie having just had its US theatrical release, the anime’s fifth season recently ending, and both the main series manga and spinoff My Hero Academia Vigilantes closing in on their finales, it’s certainly a good time to be a My Hero Academia fan. These little sketches from Horikoshi are one way that the artist likes to thank his fans for the series’ success, as well as offer them a bit more of what they want to see before it all draws to a close.
