The Mythbusters proved and debunked many famous movie myths, but which ones are their most memorable experiments?

Mythbusters became iconic for tackling urban legends, but they also took on a massive amount of myths from movies (like if you shoot out a window on an airplane at altitude, does the whole plane decompress?). This makes even more sense given the team was comprised largely of motion picture effects artists.

In fact, Adam Savage and the late Grant Imahara both worked at the visual effects studio Industrial Lights and Magic (ILM) building models on the Star Wars prequels. But what major movie myths were full of beeswax? Which were true? Here are five movie myths the Mythbusters team busted, and five they confirmed.

10 BUSTED: Shooting An Oxygen Tank Doesn’t Make It Explode

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

The myth the team challenged from the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic Jaws is right up the Mythbusters alley. Was it really plausible that shooting a scuba tank while in the mouth of a great white shark will blow said shark to smithereens? The answer: nope.

The team actually busted this twice, after the initial test raised some concerns by fans. In the second attempt in episode 235, they considered a number of factors including the caliber of the bullet. The end result was still the same, though.

9 CONFIRMED: Jack & Rose Could Fit On The Door

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

It’s a question many fans have wondered, and one that has endured for the longest time: why didn’t Rose just scoot over? From the looks of it, there was plenty of room on that piece of wood she was on for Jack to survive. She could have lied on top of him! What it have sunk? The verdict from Mythbusters: probably not.

In episode 190, the team discovered that it was plausible that both could have survived given the circumstances presented in Titanic. By taking off Rose’s life jacket and tying it to the board, it would have provided extra buoyancy.

8 BUSTED: Hellboy Can’t Stop A Moving Vehicle With His Fist

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

This particular myth is a trope that a lot of superhero movies indulge in, especially with superstrong characters. In the first Hellboy movie with Ron Perlman, the titular character punches a moving SUV with his fist causing it to somersault in the air. Admittedly, Hellboy has a massive right fist that helps his case while making him look more badass than he already is. But is it plausible? Nope.

The team built a giant fist from a steel cylinder and dropped it from a crane to try and recreate the effect. Even then, it proved impossible and the myth is just that: a myth.

7 CONFIRMED: IMF’s Lifelike Masks Can Be Made

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

The Mission: Impossible movies feature endless set-pieces that beg for myth-busting, and the show took on a few in its run. One of the core concepts of the M:I franchise is the use of face masks to alter someone’s identity so completely that it fools not only people but security measures.

Is it possible? Turns out it is. The team created silicone masks of themselves, swapped faces, and then had fans come in to try and tell them apart. The masks were so convincing that the myth proved plausible.

6 BUSTED: Ropes Can’t Help The Batmobile Make Sharp Turns

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

The team devoted all of episode 86 in 2007 to superhero myths, which goes to show how enduring the genre is. One of the key myths the team focused on originated from the 1989 Batman film.

In the movie, the Batmobile fires a grappling hook into a pole and used it to make a sharp turn otherwise impossible for any car. This proved false, even for the jet-powered Batmobile. No rope or cable existed in 2007 strong enough to withstand the force necessary.

5 CONFIRMED: Water Stops Bullets

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

The show took on another myth from the Mission: Impossible franchise, specifically from the fourth film, Ghost Protocol. Actually, a ton of movies use this same trope: the action hero, being chased by gun wielding henchmen, jumps in a nearby body of water and is safe even as bullets zing by them.

The team tested the myth and discovered that bullets do not maintain their speed and trajectory in water. Once they hit the water, the breaking force rapidly decelerates them as it would any object traveling at such speed, which is why it hurts to belly flop off the high board.

4 BUSTED: The Bride Can’t Punch Her Way Out Of A Grave

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

The Kill Bill movies offers a couple of potential myths. Mythbusters took on maybe the biggest: can a person dig themselves out of their own grave?

In Kill Bill: Volume 2, The Bride is buried alive, and punches out of her own casket and somehow climbs through six feet of dirt to the surface. The team built a robot to produce the exact amount of force a person could in the limited space provided and was only able to ever crack the lid, never punch through it.

3 CONFIRMED: Lasers Can Pop Popcorn

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

Real Genius is a cult classic and even then it’s an overlooked comedy gem from the ’80s. The film creates one of the best sight gags in movie history, and one rather easily tested. Can a laser heat up enough popcorn to blow up an entire house? Well… yes and no.

The Mythbusters team proved a laser could absolutely pop popcorn on its own. Well, with a 10-watt laser anyways – do not try it at home. There is simply no way to generate the power necessary to pop enough popcorn all at once to create the force to blow up a house… yet.

2 BUSTED: You Can’t Outrun Stormtroopers’ Blaster Fire

MythBusters The 5 Best Movie Myths That They Busted (& 5 That Were Confirmed)

Being huge Star Wars fans – and former employees of ILM as well! – Star Wars-related myths made a natural fit for the show. Mythbusters devoted an entire episode to them, including whether or not someone could dodge blaster fire from Stormtroopers like they can in the movies (no, they cannot).

Quite a few Star Wars myths were plausible though, including Ewoks taking down Imperial walkers, and Han Solo using a dead Tauntaun carcass to keep Luke Skywalker warm on Hoth.

1 CONFIRMED: Indiana Jones’ Stunts Are Possible

After Star Wars, it was pretty natural that the team would take on Indiana Jones. Across numerous episodes, the show proved that quite a few different amazing feats the archaeologist-adventurer pulls off in the films are plausible.

Junior absolutely could have run through that temple corridor without being hit by poison darts. He also could have whipped a pistol right out of someone’s hand. He could not have jumped out of an airplane in a liferaft and surfed down a mountain as he did in Temple of Doom, though. No way.
