N64 Games On Switch Cheapen Marios Anniversary Collection

Nintendo is bringing collections of popular N64 and Sega Genesis games to Nintendo Switch Online in October, and the initial line up for the N64 offerings includes Super Mario 64, the landmark title that brought the famous plumber to 3D. This marks the second re-release of Super Mario 64 in the last year or so, and this one significant cheapens the previous version that was included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which came out in September 2020.

In order to celebrate Mario’s 35th anniversary last year, Nintendo packaged Super Mario 64 with Sunshine and Galaxy and released them on the Switch as the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. The collection already caused some controversy by only being available as a limited time release, but at least it could be considered as a sort of commemorative collector’s item to partly justify its full price tag. Now, not only does Super Mario 64’s release on NSO cheapen the value of the collection, it may end up being the definitive version of the game.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars was the first time SM64 was available in high definition – outside of emulation, of course. The classic platformer previously received a remake on the Nintendo DS, a version that wasn’t used for the Switch port, but this NSO version will not only be in HD, but might also surpass the 3D All-Stars version thanks to save states. NSO also has NES and Super Nintendo games, and those have been upgraded with the luxury of save states, allowing players to create their own saves outside of the games’ traditional functionality. This has done wonders for negating some of the difficulty in older games, and it seems likely that the new N64 and Genesis games will follow suit.

Super Mario 64 Is Ultimately Better With More Accessibility

When Super Mario 3D All-Stars was first unveiled, many were skeptical of the timed release, predicting Nintendo would attempt to sell each title individually after the collection was delisted. The anti-consumer strategy of limited releases aside, Nintendo so far hasn’t tried to double-dip on any of the 3D All-Stars Switch ports – or at least that will be the case until Super Mario 64 gets added to NSO. Those who bought into the collection while it was available are at least partially left out to dry, but Super Mario 64 becoming more readily available is ultimately a good thing. Nintendo has a massive catalogue of classic games, and has only recently begun making some available on the Switch through NSO.

As far as anyone knows, Super Mario 64 will now be playable as long as Nintendo Switch Online remains a functioning service, essentially future-proofing the revolutionary platformer for the time being. It would still be nice to have it available for purchase individually (like Nintendo has done with retro games in the past through the Virtual Console), though this is a step in the right direction, the biggest caveat being that Nintendo is charging an extra subscription fee for the N64 games. Super Mario 64 will, however, be available to more people, which can only be a good thing, even if it does strike a blow against the value of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
