Namor The SubMariner and Valkyrie Are Joining Marvels Avengers

Warning! Spoilers for Avengers #53 by Marvel Comics

It appears like the Avengers are about to expand, as a new solicit for Avengers #53 reveals that Namor the Sub-Mariner and Jane Foster’s Valkyrie are about to join the team. In the tease for the upcoming issue, Black Panther and the Avengers will team up to take on two powerful villains with new teammates King Namor and Valkyrie. The addition of the two heroes hints the Avengers are about to experience a notable roster shakeup.

The current Avengers roster in Jason Aaron and current artist Javier Garron’s ongoing series is likely to change sooner than later. As it stands, the team consists of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, She-Hulk, and Robbie Reyes’ Ghost-Rider. Starbrand and the Phoenix-powered echo are also close associates of the team. However, with She-Hulk getting a new series from Rainbow Rowell and Roge Antonio, the upcoming return of Johnny Blaze, and a potentially deadly Multiversal saga in Avengers: Forever, it seems turnover on the team is coming. Marvel revealed two new members who are joining the team in 2022.

In solicits for Avengers #53 by Jason Aaron and Javier Garron from Marvel Comics, the Avengers Celestial headquarters will be attacked by one of the most powerful versions of Doctor Doom and a young version of Thanos from the Multiverse. To stop the supervillains, Black Panther will be forced to team up alongside two of his newest Avengers teammates: Namor the Sub-Mariner, and Jane Foster’s Valkyrie. Namor the Sub-Mariner has had a rocky time as of late, as recent issues of Avengers revealed his rule has been a disaster – as Atlanteans openly rebelled against the antihero during the recent World War She-Hulk arc. Despite calls for Namor to step down, the hard-headed King of Atlantis hasn’t stepped down, although that could soon change. Meanwhile, with Thor returning to his title, Jane Foster became a Valkyrie and starred in the recently completed The Mighty Valkyries miniseries, which saw the hero take on Hela.

It makes sense to see both Namor and Jane Foster get higher profiles in the comics and join the Avengers. After all, Foster will appear as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Love and Thunder, while it’s been heavily rumored that Namor will be the main antagonist in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. So, putting both heroes on the Avengers might synergize eventual roles in the MCU. Still, it’s great to see the Avengers add two interesting new members in Namor the Sub-Mariner and Jane Foster’s Valkyrie. Avengers #53 comes to comic book stores in February.
