There are many themes that make up Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto, and one of the biggest themes is that of mentor-student relationships. It all begins with Iruka taking an interest in Naruto and helping him graduate from the academy. From there, Kakashi takes on the role of Naruto’s mentor, and then it’s passed onto Jiraiya and even later to Yamato. Although not a great one, Sasuke finds a pseudo-mentor in Orochimaru when he defects and goes to him seeking power. Likewise, Tsunade mentors Sakura in the art of medical ninjutsu.

There’s another mentor for Sakura that tends to be forgotten about when compared to Tsunade, and that’s Lady Chiyo of Sunegakure. While she only helps Sakura out during one battle, she teaches the Konoha kunoichi valuable lessons in the fields of both battle and medical ninjutsu. Though she isn’t a part of the series for long, there are still some details about Lady Chiyo that not all fans may know.

10 She’s A Playable Character In Fifteen Different Video Games For The Series

Lady Chiyo might not appear to have many abilities to use in combat when compared to many other characters. After all, during her fight against Sasori, she’s shown controlling Sakura and doesn’t have many techniques of her own.

The video games more than remedy this, though, in a way that suits her character well. In many of her fifteen playable game appearances, Chiyo makes use of the Mother and Father puppets created by Sasori and fights with them.

9 Her Birthday Is October Fifteenth, Making Her A Libra

It’s incredibly common for fans of any given series to want to know all the little tidbits about its characters possible. While not directly mentioned within shows most of the time, characters are almost always given canon birthdays and corresponding astrological signs.

This is true even of more minor characters, and Lady Chiyo is no exception, having her birthday fall on October fifteenth. While not fitting all of the typical Libra traits, she does display some in her empathetic nature towards a young Sasori and her strong desire to help her village.

8 She And Her Brother Ebizo Are Referred To As The Honoured Siblings

Chiyo and her brother Ebizo are highly revered throughout the land of Sunegakure. The former is known for her medical expertise involving poison, as well as her skills as a puppet master.

Meanwhile, Ebizo is credited as a highly intelligent strategist who helped his village time and time again. Together, they’re referred to as the “honored siblings” within Sunegakure and many of the villages they have connections with.

7 Her Rivalry With Tsunade Was Born During The Second Shinobi World War

Chiyo is initially hesitant to fight alongside Sakura, and the reason for this stems all the way back during the Second Shinobi World War. This is where Chiyo’s knowledge of poisons truly shines.

However, every time Chiyo would attempt to use her knowledge of poisons to her village’s advantage, she would quickly be countered by Lady Tsunade’s own medical expertise. This gives Chiyo’s later fight alongside Sakura more meaning and shows that she’s grown since the second war.

6 She’s The One Responsible For Sealing The One-Tails Inside Of Gaara

Chiyo’s final scene where she sacrifices herself to revive Gaara is incredibly emotional. Not only does she have ties to him being from the same village, but Chiyo is actually the one who sealed the One-Tails Jinchuriki inside of him.

This was done under the orders of the Fourth Kazekage after realizing that his elder siblings, Temari and Kankuro, were incompatible candidates.

5 She Has Odd Hobbies, Including Enjoying Playing Dead

The official Naruto databooks written by Masashi Kishimoto himself include a ton of extra information for the characters within the series. This includes hobbies, favorite foods, and wishes for the future, and Chiyo especially has some odd hobbies.

Her hobbies are listed as pretending to be dead, playing senile, and fishing. She loves to play jokes and would often pretend to play dead to prank her brother, laughing at his serious reactions.

4 Aside From Her Stamina, Her Official Statistics Are Quite High

Not only do the official databooks tell fans about characters’ hobbies and dreams, but they also list their official combat statistics. Despite her old age, Chiyo is still a powerful force to be reckoned with, though her stamina is low.

Starting with her lowest stat, Chiyo’s stamina is a two-out-of-five. Her genjutsu and strength are both three-and-a-half, while her speed is a four. Her taijutsu and hand seals are four-and-a-half, and finally, her ninjutsu is an unbeatable five-out-of-five.

3 She Wanted To Use Her Life-Giving Technique To Bring Back Sasori’s Parents

During her time as the head of the Puppet Brigade, Chiyo developed a jutsu that could bring back others from either the brink of death or even death itself. It’s known as the One’s Own Life Reincarnation technique, and it’s this very ability that allows her to save Gaara’s life.

However, the actual reason why she developed it in the first place isn’t very well-known, and it’s rather heartbreaking. Chiyo originally developed this jutsu so she could use it to bring back Sasori’s parents but was never able to do so.

2 Her Sacrifice Made Even Her Long-Time Rival Tsunade Respect Her

Chiyo’s rivalry with Tsunade has been going on ever since the Second Shinobi World War. Chiyo’s knowledge of poison is invaluable but always countered by Tsunade. It’s understandable that she’d be unable to compete with the world’s highest-renowned medical ninja.

Despite how long the two considered each other rivals, Chiyo earns Tsunade’s respect after sacrificing herself to restore Gaara’s life. Tsunade goes on to remember Chiyo and respects her ability to believe in the next generation of shinobi.

1 She’s Knowledgeable In The Field Of Genjutsu And Can Counter It

Although Chiyo prefers to use her puppets as her main source of both offense and defense and battle, they’re far from her only combative tool. She’s shown to be proficient in taijutsu and can even see through and dispel genjutsu, as she’d had some dealings with the Uchiha clan in the past.

This ability, while relatively unexplored, is one that she actually shares with Sakura, tying the two even closer together in a very subtle way.
