Naruto Gets A New Nine Tails Transformation (But At A High Cost)

Naruto has obtained a major new Kurama transformation in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. In the original Naruto series, the titular ninja trains diligently to learn signature techniques such as Shadow Clones and the Rasengan, but as the protagonist’s strength grows, he’s able to draw power from the Nine-Tails demon fox living rent-free in his body. Beginning with Nail-Tails Chakra Mode, Naruto soon levels up to Kurama Mode by befriending the beast within, and then Tailed Beast Mode, where Naruto’s chakra takes the physical shape of Kurama himself.

Currently in the Boruto manga, Naruto is fighting alongside his son and Sasuke Uchiha against Isshiki Otsutsuki. Similar to Kaguya from the original series, Isshiki seeks to grow the Divine Chakra Fruit, which would bring ruin to the planet. Boruto and his new pal Kawaki are integral to Isshiki’s plot, and as the Seventh Hokage, it’s Naruto’s duty to defend his family and village. The Otsutsuki are inherently fearsome foes, and after losing against Isshiki previously, the team of Naruto and Sasuke are once again falling short on the battlefield.

Boruto chapter 51 delivers a massive bombshell, revealing that Naruto unknowingly possessed a higher, more powerful Jinchuriki transformation all along. As Naruto contemplates sacrificing himself to stop Isshiki, Kurama chimes in, sensationally claiming that he can tap into a greater power. Echoing the sentiments of fans, Naruto asks why Kurama never mentioned this during the numerous other life-threatening battles the duo were involved in, and the demon fox explains that such a high-level transformation would cost both Naruto his life. Boruto hasn’t yet christened Naruto’s new form with a name, but does offer a glimpse at the radical new design. Naruto now has a coat with long tails emanating from the back, while his face takes on aspects of Kurama’s appearance, including the facial markings and fox ears. Essentially, Naruto’s upgrade is Kurama Mode with extra beast-like qualities and an overblown flowing chakra coat reminiscent of Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 hair in Dragon Ball.

Despite the explanation offered by Kurama, Naruto fans might still question why this information is only coming to light now. Perhaps Kurama was too selfish to risk his own safety in the old days, or maybe Isshiki is just that dangerous. The bond between Naruto and his pet fox has strengthened greatly during the era of peace, so it’s plausible that allowing Naruto to access this deadly final form crosses the final barrier of trust between Kurama and his ninja vessel. Maybe Naruto becoming a father has affected the wily old fox more than he’d like to admit. Either way, Naruto’s latest form has fans buzzing with excitement, and the design looks appropriately heroic. Both Sasuke and Isshiki marvel at the boost in chakra, promising a whole new Naruto when the fight continues in the next chapter.

But will Naruto actually die from this new transformation? The death of the Seventh Hokage was teased at the very beginning of the Boruto sequel series, when Kawaki stood upon a crumbled Konoha village and strongly suggested Naruto had been defeated. With his days seemingly numbered, Naruto’s new Nine Tails mode could be what ultimately kills him, paying off the early foreshadowing.

Fortunately, Naruto’s death isn’t yet certain. Throughout the original series, it was repeatedly stated that a character would die if they opened the Eight Gates, but when Might Guy crossed that line in the final battle, he was easily healed by a Sage of Six Paths-powered Naruto. Furthermore, it has long been established that Naruto possesses unnatural chakra reserves and uncanny life force. While Kurama should know Naruto’s limits better than anyone, it’s in the protagonist’s very nature to survive. Another important clue is the wording of Kawaki’s comments in Boruto’s first chapter. In some translations, Kawaki suggests he was the one who killed Naruto, which means the Seventh Hokage will survive Kurama’s last resort gambit, perhaps even learning how to control this new form without risking his life.
