Naughty Dog Admits Developing Multiple Games At Once Is A Struggle

Naughty Dog recently admitted that it still struggles with developing multiple games at once. This confession comes just days after it was learned that a The Last of Us remake for the PlayStation 5 is coming from Naughty Dog. The Last of Us and Uncharted series are both beloved by fans because of the overall high quality of the games, but this quality comes with a cost.

There was a four-year gap between the releases of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, as well as a seven-year gap between The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. With both games winning many of the awards they were nominated for, it goes without saying that the delay did not hinder players’ enjoyment. Still, with the news that another Uncharted title is reportedly in development by another studio, some fans were left wondering about the status of the studio.

Yesterday on The AIAS Game Maker’s Notebook (transcribed by VGC), Naughty Dog’s President Evan Wells admitted that the studio has struggled with developing multiple projects at once for some time — and still does. Wells talked about the early stages of The Last of Us’ development, specifically how:

“At the end of Uncharted 2, Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann went off to start designing [that]…They embarked on that and the idea was we would build a team around it and have two teams going at once, and we just did not achieve that at all.”

Uncharted 3 was also in development at this time, and Wells mentions how, “The amount of effort that was required to finish Uncharted 3 at the time was stealing resources away from The Last of Us,” which ultimately resulted in one game taking priority over the other.

As video games only get larger and more detailed (and fan expectations rise), more and more time and resources are required to deliver a finished product. Wells also admits to this, saying, “I would say even today we’re just short of that. We definitely have multiple projects, but only one that is getting the lion’s share of focus at any time.”

Naughty Dog has had a turbulent time as of late: The Last of Us 2 had many development challenges and suffered many setbacks and delays, as well as leaks over the course of its seven-year development cycle. THEN, the dev team received extensive criticism and even death threats from players who did not enjoy the game. Yet, on the other hand, The Last of Us 2 set records at The Game Awards in December for both nominations and wins.

So, while the longer development cycles may not be what Naughty Dog or its fans want (Wells mentions that a new Jak and Daxter title was scrapped to focus on The Last of Us), the quality of the final product does not appear to be affected just yet. Considering many triple-A games are now rushed, launch unfinished, and require extensive patches to be playable, it appears as though fans are ok with waiting longer, so long as the game releases in good condition.
