Netflix has celebrated the arrival of the original Cowboy Bebop anime series on their service by posting a video of the series’ iconic theme song. The memorable opening credits featured an instrumental music piece written by series composer Yoko Kanno. The full original 1998 series joins the service’s catalog of anime films and series.

Cowboy Bebop follows Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Ed, and Ein, as they track down bounties across the cosmos in 2071. Exploring themes such as loneliness, dealing with the past, and trauma, the series was widely celebrated for its style, animation, and character, becoming a major factor in anime’s rising popularity in the west. Now, the iconic anime that took the world by storm in the late 90s has been released worldwide on the service ahead of the live-action series release, with the service’s social media sharing the iconic opening in celebration.

Posted by the Netflix Geeked Twitter account, the short clip features the series iconic opening credits. The opening credits are set to the series theme song “Tank!”, an instrumental jazz piece which was written by series composer Kanno, performed by Japanese band Seatbelts and saxophone player Masato Honda. The titles feature colorful, stylized shots of the main cast, their weapons, and their respective spacecraft amongst pieces of text that establish the show’s tone and premise. Kanno’s music is one of Cowboy Bebop’s most celebrated aspects, with the jazz-focused soundtrack being created by Kanno and Seatbelts, who were assembled by the composer to work on the series score, as well as “Tank!” and the series ending theme “The Real Folk Blues.. During Netflix’s global digital fan event, TUDUM, fans got a first glimpse of Cowboy Bebop’s live-action opening credits, which faithfully recreated the anime’s opening sequence, complete with “Tank!” playing over the imagery. Kanno was previously confirmed to be returning to compose the live-action series through a Twitter post from the Netflix Geeked account.

With Netflix gearing up for the live-action series release on November 19, acquiring the original series ahead of its premiere is a smart move. Not only does it attract existing Cowboy Bebop fans, but also allows new fans who are either excited for or brought in by Netflix’s take on the universe to watch the original series. Cowboy Bebop is a highly influential series that impacted the industry and opened up the potential of anime in the west, so many are looking towards Netflix’s series with both anticipation and concern.
