Mads Mikkelsen is a retired assassin being hunted down by an army of ruthless killers in the new trailer and poster for Netflix’s Polar. The thriller, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Matt Lucas, Ruby O. Fee, Johnny Knoxville and Richard Dreyfuss.
Based on the Dark Horse graphic novel Polar: Came From the Cold by Victor Santos, the movie stars Casino Royale’s Mikkelsen as a top assassin nicknamed The Black Kaiser, who is forced out of retirement to do battle against an array of hired killers who all want to do him in. Polar by the way is not to be confused with Arctic, that other thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen, which also recently debuted its first trailer and poster. Arctic is in fact an Icelandic film starring Mikkelsen as a plane crash survivor who, instead of facing an onslaught of assassins, must battle the elements in order to stay alive.

As the first glimpses of Polar demonstrate, this is definitely not a snowbound survival movie, but is instead a stylish action-thriller. The first trailer and poster from Netflix preview all the mayhem as Mikkelsen is pitted against a whole assortment of fellow assassins. EW exclusively debuted the poster art featuring Mikkelsen as The Black Kaiser along with the tagline: “If the job doesn’t kill you, retirement will.” See both the trailer and poster below:
The trailer kicks off with Mikkelsen’s character Duncan Vizla enjoying his peaceful retirement in a rustic setting together with Hudgens, who doesn’t know about his mysterious past as a paid killer (he tells her he used to be in the “funeral business”). Of course, Vizla’s past soon catches up to him in a major way as a team of assassins is placed on his trail by his former employers, who want to kill him to recover $8 million. Because Vizla is after all one of the greatest killers in the world, he gives his would-be murderers more than a run for their money.
The movie’s visual style definitely gives away its graphic novel roots, as does the outrageousness of some of the action. In one memorable moment, Vizla takes down a whole group of enemies using machine guns controlled by high-tech gloves equipped with laser sights (a contraption even Walter White never dreamed up). The ever-icy Mikkelsen certainly makes for an interesting presence at the center of all the mayhem. It’s hard not to pick up John Wick vibes from not only the plot, but Mikkelsen’s whole world-weary aura. Judging by the trailer, things escalate to ridiculous heights, making Polar a potentially fun watch for fans of high-style assassin/revenge movies.
