Netflix’s The Witcher season 2 casts Killing Eve’s Kim Bodnia as Vesemir in the upcoming episodes. The Witcher, launched in December 2019, is a fantasy drama show based on the series of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, as well as the popular video game adaptations from CD Projekt Red. Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia, the titular “witcher,” a monster hunter for hire with supernatural powers. Across season 1’s eight episodes, Geralt finds himself embroiled in royal scandals and wars, and becomes responsible for Princess Cirilla, all while fighting terrifying monsters and mythical beasts. The Witcher season 2 was confirmed in November 2019.

Vesemir is Geralt’s mentor, a fellow witcher who trained Cavill’s character in the witcher’s keep of Kaer Morhen. He is the oldest remaining witcher, having survived a vicious attack from an angry mob of mages, and serves as a sort of father figure for Geralt and his Child Surprise, Ciri. His age and experience led him to become a fencing instructor for the School of the Wolf, where Geralt and other characters trained and gained their mutations. In the books, and seen in flashbacks in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Ciri trained to be a witcher with Geralt and Vesemir at Kaer Morhen, where she uncovered more about her mysterious powers. While few details about season 2 have been revealed, an Instagram post from Ciri actress Freya Allan hinted that she would be heading to Kaer Morhen in the upcoming season. The keep is an important location in the world of The Witcher, and was even made explorable in VR by a fan.

Via a tweet from Netflix, Danish actor Kim Bodnia will be playing Vesemir, described as “the oldest and most experienced Witcher” on the Continent. Bodnia is most widely known for his role as detective Martin Rohde in the Scandinavian crime drama The Bridge; his other credits include roles on Killing Eve, Pusher, and Jon Stewart’s Rosewater. Rumors had swirled that Mark Hamill (Star Wars) was in contention for the role, but that has been sufficiently disproven by Netflix’s tweet.

Bodnia is not the only new face joining Netflix’s hit fantasy series. Game of Thrones actor and fellow Dane Kristofer Hivju was cast in The Witcher season 2 as Nivellen, a cursed man featured in The Last Wish, the first book in the series. Two other witchers have been cast, and will likely appear alongside Vesemir at Kaer Morhen as they train Ciri. Details have also emerged pointing to the presence of a fearsome elf army appearing in season 2, who are a constant threat on the path to the witcher’s keep.

To fans of the games, Vesemir was one of the most prominent characters missing from the show’s first season, and Kaer Morhen is one of the most iconic locations in the series, serving as a player hub in Wild Hunt. Given that the notable success of the Netflix show has led to a huge spike in the Witcher game sales, the inclusion of such an iconic character and castle was inevitable. Travel to Kaer Morhen when The Witcher season 2 drops some time in 2021.
