New Girl 5 Couples That Are Perfect Together (& 5 That Make No Sense)

New Girl centers around Jessica Day, a recently dumped school teacher who found a new place on craigslist with three male roommates. It details their lives, both personally and professionally, and their relationships — both with each other and with romantic partners.

There were some couples on the show who made absolute perfect sense and who were perfect together. But then there were those couples where you couldn’t figure out how they ended up together and made no sense to the audience.

These couples would either make the storyline even better or they would completely ruin them. So let’s break down the couples that were perfect together, and the ones that just weren’t, on New Girl.

10 Perfect Together: Schmidt And Cece

Schmidt and Cece started out seeming like they would be nothing more than unrequited love, with Schmidt being obsessed with the always aloof Cece. The model (and Jess’ best friend) was the woman Schmidt could never take his eyes off of.

And not long into the first season they had become friends with benefits, which quickly turned into a relationship. Of course, there were ups and downs for these two crazy kids, with Schmidt making frequent mistakes and Cece almost getting married to someone else.

But eventually, they realized they could only ever love each other and became engaged, which led to an eventful wedding. By the end of the series, they had started a family together that was too cute for words.

9 Makes No Sense: Jess And Robby

There were a lot of reasons this relationship between Jess and Robby should have never happened. He was Cece’s ex-boyfriend, for one. But then there was the fact Jess was still very much in love with Nick, her ex and current roommate, when she began dating Robby.

They may both be total dorks, but they seemed more like brother and sister than a couple whenever they interacted. When we later learned that they were, in fact, loosely related, it just made the relationship go from being weird to altogether gross.

Fans weren’t pleased with the relationship from the beginning, but this revelation only made things ten times worse.

8 Perfect Together: Jess And Sam

One of the dreamiest boyfriends Jess ever had was Sam, the doctor who went from fun hookup to serious boyfriend in the blink of an eye. At first, he was just the gorgeous guy Jess was casually seeing that was also great comedic relief on the show.

But over time, he became a serious contender of winning Jess’ heart, once and for all. They broke up in season 2 after he found out Nick and Jess had kissed, but reconciled in the later seasons, seeming to get back on track with their relationship.

They were adorable together and had a very respectful, loving relationship with great chemistry to boot. It didn’t work out in the end because of their love for other people, but it was still amazing to see them as a couple while it lasted.

7 Makes No Sense: Nick And Angie

If we know anything about Nick Miller, it’s that he’s not typically a risk taker, he’s a terrible liar, and he doesn’t like responsibility. Which is why it was so baffling to see him date the polar opposite of himself in his brief relationship with Angie.

She was a stripper who had a very daring personality and led a lifestyle that had risks around every corner. This both excited and scared Nick.

Their new romance was short-lived when Angie left him in the dust while on a weekend getaway with Jess and Sam. It became evident that Angie’s rock and roll lifestyle just wouldn’t mesh with Nick’s.

6 Perfect Together: Schmidt And Elizabeth

Before we first met Schmidt in season 1, he had been an overweight young man who didn’t really fit in with the cool crowd. During this time in college, he met a girl named Elizabeth, who accepted him for who he was and the two began dating.

It was a sweet relationship but it eventually fizzled out and Schmidt moved on, at least for a bit. He lost the weight and became obsessed with being accepted by everyone who was “important”. But in season 2, he gravitated back to Elizabeth and they began dating again.

Picking up where they left off, it was as though no time had passed at all, and you could see the chemistry was still there, clear as day.

5 Makes No Sense: Cece And Shivrang

Not long into the second season, we learned that Cece had a limited amount of time for her fertility if she wanted to have children. This made her become serious in finding a meaningful relationship so she could start a family.

She briefly thought Schmidt could be that man for her — even after he broke her heart — but when it came time to prove himself, he fell short. So she decided to try something similar to an “arranged marriage” with the help of her mother. Enter Shivrang, the British man who was totally not Cece’s type.

He was more traditional, extremely sensitive, and the two were severely lacking in chemistry. It just didn’t work.

4 Perfect Together: Winston And Aly

Winston was always looking to find that special someone but always seemed to have great difficulty in finding the one for him. For a while, he gravitated towards spending time with his beloved cat, Ferguson, instead of socializing or dating. But love comes when you least expect it sometimes, and that’s exactly what happened with his partner, Aly.

They were partnered together when Winston became a cop and joined the force, and while things didn’t go smoothly at first, they couldn’t deny their feelings for each other forever.

The two eventually married, and by the series finale, had a family of their own. Aly was the ending Winston always deserved.

3 Makes No Sense: Schmidt And Fawn

New Girl 5 Couples That Are Perfect Together (& 5 That Make No Sense)

Fawn Moscato was a local councilwoman in Los Angeles who began to woo Schmidt as her arm candy in season 4. She never seemed like a woman that Schmidt would be seriously interested in, and her character seemed more like a cartoonish take on a political woman than anything else.

Schmidt went from being in love with a woman like Cece — who always seemed destined to be his other half — to being in a relationship with Fawn, who manipulated him and only treated him like a piece of meat.

The drastic turn seemed a little far-fetched, even for a quirky sitcom like New Girl.

2 Perfect Together: Nick And Jess

Nick and Jess were the quintessential couple of New Girl. Fans adored their relationship and it was easy to see why with how they interacted with one another.

Their constant banter combined with their sizzling makeout sessions turned into a deep and meaningful relationship between the two roommates. They did break up for a period of time beginning at the end of season 3, but they found their way back to each other in the season 6 finale.

Watching the fan-favorite couple finish the series out by falling back in love, getting married, and starting their lives together, was the perfect way to say goodbye to one of the best comedies to come out in recent years.

1 Makes No Sense: Winston And Shelby

Shelby had been an old hookup of Winston’s before his basketball career in Latvia began. When he returned to Los Angeles, he wanted to pick up where they left off, but she made it clear she didn’t want that after she had been less than enthused during their date.

He realized his mistake, apologized, and soon after they began dating. They may have been cute at first, but the two seemed like they were too different to ever make it as a real couple.

That fact was proven when they hit a rough patch in season 2 and just couldn’t work it out anymore. And their breakup had been long overdue, in our opinion.
