Warning: contains spoilers for Doron Dororon chapter 1!

Doron Dororon, the third of Shonen Jump’s new manga series, debuted in the latest issue, and the series is sporting a pedigree that draws comparisons to popular ongoing series like My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer.

The 55-page first chapter introduces a world where mankind is plagued by attacks from Mononoke, man-eating demons which roam the land. People are protected from these Mononoke by the Samurai, warriors with supernatural powers who slay the demons when they appear. Protagonist Dora Sasaki has a special hatred for these Mononoke, and dreams of the day he can join the ranks of the Samurai. Despite his young age, Dora is already skilled at fighting, having “trained” for his entire life. Sadly, all those hopes are dashed when a health screen picks up the fact that Dora has no capacity for supernatural abilities at all.

The premise undoubtedly sounds familiar: demonic creatures which feed on humans are a common enemy in anime and manga, like the Hollows in Bleach or the titular demons of Demon Slayer. It’s also become particularly familiar in recent years to see a protagonist who desperately wants a special job that they are utterly disqualified for as a result of things beyond their control, like My Hero Academia’s Deku or Black Clover’s Asta. These stand in contrast to the big series of the 90’s and early 2000’s, where the protagonist typically had some special, innate ability that no-one else could match, like Dragon Ball, Bleach, and Naruto.

While the basic idea may be chasing modern trends, Doron Dororon feels sincere rather than a cash-in clone series. Dora is a likable protagonist, and his early encounter with the friendly Mononoke Kusanagi forces him to challenge his perceptions. Kusanagi is shaping up to be a major character, combining the creature’s supernatural powers with Dora’s skill and experience in a fight. Because he refuses to eat humans, he’s a bit wimpy compared to the other Mononoke, but that sets Kusanagi up as a cute mascot-type character like Plue from Rave Master. Kusanagi’s shapeshifting abilities suggest that Dora might have access to a more diverse power set than a lot of other modern protagonists as they learn to work together, but all that remains to be seen. For now, it’s a human and a demon, from opposite worlds, working together to make things better for everyone. This first chapter also sets up the fact that while Dora may now have his dream job, he’s doing it as a vigilante, and the day will come where that puts him in conflict with the officially recognized Samurai.

Although it’s still early, Doron Dororon already feels like it has the potential to be a hit. A cute mascot, a likable protagonist, a world with a little more gray in it than it looks at first glance, and some potentially interesting plot threads to pursue mean that so long as Doron Dororon can offer quality fight scenes, it has a solid shot at joining Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia in Shonen Jump’s pantheon of manga legends.
