New Pokémon Game Lets You Earn Points For Sleeping

One of the upcoming Pokémon smartphone games will be heading in a strange new direction for the series, as Pokémon Sleep is a game that will reward players based on their sleeping prowess. The incredible success of Pokémon Go has prompted The Pokémon Company to invest in new smartphone projects. There are games like Pokémon Quest, Pokémon: Magikarp Jump, Pokémon Duel, and Pokémon Rumble Rush available for mobile phones.

The Pokémon Company has also just announced two new mobile projects – Pokémon Home, which will allow players to trade Pokémon from games as far back as Pokémon X & Y (which technically allows Pokémon from as far back as Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire to be traded with the right hardware), and Pokémon Masters, which is a battle-themed RPG starring some of the most powerful trainers from the series.

The Pokémon Company recently held a Pokémon Business Strategy Announcement event, which was a press conference detailing upcoming Pokémon projects. The strangest announcement made during the event was for a new mobile game called Pokémon Sleep, which will use a new peripheral to monitor how long the player sleeps for, which will be reflected by progress in the game. The game is being developed by Select Button, which is the company responsible for Pokémon: Magikarp Jump.

The device that Pokémon Sleep will use is called the Pokémon Go Plus +, which the player needs to put on their bed while they sleep. The Pokémon Go Plus + can track basic information about the length of time that the player sleeps using an embedded accelerometer which transmits data via Bluetooth to a smartphone. The sleeping aspect of the Pokémon Go Plus + will also be compatible with Pokémon Go, though the details of how this will work haven’t been explained.

Pokémon Sleep might be the most bizarre direction for a new Pokémon smartphone game to go. The inspiration for Pokémon Sleep was to make sleep entertaining in the same way that Pokémon Go made going outdoors and walking fun for a lot of fans. The Pokémon Company has yet to explain how Pokémon Sleep will work in terms of gameplay, or what data the Pokémon Go Plus + will monitor, but it seems as if it will reward the player for sleeping for an appropriate amount of time. The capacity to sleep for a full eight hours and wake up feeling rested is something that unfortunately eludes a lot of people, so there are some Pokémon fans who’ll need a real-life Jigglypuff if they’re to make the most of Pokémon Sleep.
