Hollywood may have a questionable obsession with prequels right now, but Ridley Scott’s Prometheus looks to be one of the better ones on the horizon. The film aims to expand the mythology of the Alien franchise, explore provocative questions about the beginnings of human existence, and include narrative threads that link it directly to Scott’s 1979 sci-fi/horror classic (at least, during the last eight minutes).

Part of the way Prometheus seeks to accomplish said task(s) is by doing more than just redressing the characters and plot of Alien under the pretense that it’s offering additional, substantial insight on the events of its predecessor (The Thing prequel, looking at you…).

Previously-released clips and viral videos for Prometheus have offered an early look at the film’s important players, such as Weyland Industries rep Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) and android “David” (Michael Fassbender). The first of today’s two featurettes focuses on another central character: the human scientist Charlie Holloway, as played by Logan Marshall-Green (Dark Blue, Devil).

Much like Miss Vickers, “David”, and Captain Janek (Idris Elba), Holloway is poised to have his own intriguing character arc in Prometheus – as screenshots from the film suggest he will undergo a disturbing physical transformation, upon coming into contact with mysterious extraterrestrial life.

The second new Prometheus featurette focuses on Scott’s “vision” for the film. Hence, we get even more cool behind-the-scenes footage of the filmmaker and his cast/crew working on set – along with the standard slate of vague comments from the Prometheus production team, alluding to how the movie will address ideas about the creation and evolution of life (among other lofty subjects).

In other words: we’ve reached that point in the buildup to Prometheus where we’re just running in circles, talking about the film’s gorgeous 3D cinematography and ambitious themes. Fortunately, there are only a couple weeks left until the movie opens in theaters – and people will be able to decide for themselves whether the final result justifies the hype.

Prometheus opens in the UK on June 1st, 2012. It will reach the U.S. a week later, on June 8th.
