New Star Wars Holiday Special Coming To Disney… In LEGO

A new Star Wars Holiday Special is coming to Disney+, using LEGO characters and a time-travel plot that references the original disastrous version. The original Star Wars Holiday Special has gone down in history as not only the weirdest piece of Star Wars content but arguably one of the most embarrassing Christmas specials of all time. The ill-advised special was broadcast over the holiday season in 1978 and was an attempt to cash in on the massively popular franchise in between the first movie and its sequel.

Featuring the original actors Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher, the infamous special focused on a Wookie celebration called “Life Day,” which was a replacement for Christmas. It was almost immediately disowned by the actors as well as George Lucas. However, it has had a second life in recent years, with fans watching the embarrassingly kitsch show because it’s so bad it’s funny. Hamill has previously referenced how awful it was, asking US President Donald Trump to pardon it, and The Mandalorian director Jon Favreau half-jokingly suggested resurrecting it last year.

Now, Disney reveals that it has gone ahead and created a new Star Wars Holiday Special, but this time it’s been done in LEGO. The new special, which drops on Disney+ on November 17, will acknowledge the original, making gentle fun of its bad reputation. It will also feature the current crop of Star Wars characters, with Rey traveling back in time through the Star Wars universe and meeting several characters, including a young Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Emperor Palpatine, and Darth Vader, on the way.

The news doesn’t mention whether the special will feature the original actors providing the voice performances for their characters, but hints that some actors will make cameos. It wouldn’t reveal who, though, obviously not wanting to spoil anything. You can bet, though, that Hamill would be keen to lend his voice to the show, given his previous Star Wars voice cameos and his enthusiastic participation in Star Wars fan culture.

On the other hand, if Ford appears, it will be a huge surprise. The gruff actor is known for not being a fan of the franchise, and would likely have required a huge paycheck to step into the recording booth for this special. However, the likelihood of the newer stars having voice cameos is higher, given that they are still so closely attached to the franchise.

One thing is for sure, Lego’s Star Wars Holiday Special is unlikely to be anywhere near as bad as the 1978 original. In fact, based on the description provided by Disney, this could be quite a fun, tongue-in-cheek special that plays with its dubious origins, while also poking fun at the Star Wars universe as a whole.
