ViacomCBS announced a new slate of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films headed to Paramount+.

As reported by Variety, the new series of animated films were announced during ViacomCBS’ investor day on Feb. 15 and will each focus on the most famous villains in the TMNT franchise. The films are slated to be released on Paramount+ sometime in 2023 and plot details have not yet been announced.

It was also announced that three new Spongebob Squarepants spinoff films, as well as both a live-action and CG-animated Dora the Explorer series, would release on Paramount+ in 2023. “As we’ve known with Nickelodeon’s long-standing success, the kids and family audience is incredibly loyal, and we see that on Paramount Plus as well, with kids and family ranking as one of the strongest genres on the service in terms of both engagement and subscriber acquisition,” said Brian Robbins, chief content officer, Movies and Kids & Family for Paramount Plus. “So as they stay for our shows and look for even more of them, we’re doubling down on giving them what they want by expanding the universes of the characters they love the best.”

Paramount+’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle animated film series will release on the streaming platform around the same time as a CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, which is slated to premiere on theaters Aug. 11, 2023. The currently untitled project will be helmed by The Mitchells vs. The Machines co-director Jeff Rowe with a screenplay written by Brendan O’Brien. Rogen and Goldberg will produce with Point Grey Pictures partners James Weaver and Josh Fagen, as well as Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon EVP of Animation Production and Development Ramsey Naito.

“Our Kids and Family content is not only bringing young audiences to Paramount+ but it’s also a key component in retaining our existing subscriber base and expanding their viewership habits,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer for ViacomCBS Streaming. “Paramount Plus is a service for the whole household and we’re now seeing nearly half of our subscribers engaging with kids and family content on the service, a double-digit gain over last year.”

Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in the mid-1980s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise centers on four anthropomorphized turtles — Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael — who were trained in the martial arts by a rat named Splinter, their master and adoptive father.

Paramount+’s animated, villain-focused TMNT films will premiere on the streaming service in 2023.
