A new trademark listing from Nintendo suggests that the company has big plans in place for The Legend of Zelda series in 2021, its 35th anniversary. With the legendary franchise set to celebrate this important anniversary next year, Nintendo was always likely to make it a big deal. After all, The Legend of Zelda is one of the publisher’s most successful and popular brands, and Nintendo is known for celebrating such anniversaries for other games like the Super Mario series.

Although The Legend of Zelda has always been an important part of Nintendo’s back catalog, the series has seen something of a resurgence in recent years. Its 2017 release Breath of the Wild is widely considered to be one of the best entries in the series and the recently released Link’s Awakening was also critically acclaimed. With the Switch already having two great games in the franchise, the gaming giant has a big audience waiting for more The Legend of Zelda games.

Twitter user NaZyrus07 has uncovered a trademark listing from Nintendo that seems to indicate that the company has a lot of plans for The Legend of Zelda to celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary. Although Nintendo has not officially announced anything to do with the series for 2021, the details in the listing suggest that fans will get plenty of new video games, merchandise, and media based on The Legend of Zelda. The trademark filing includes things like toys and clothing, in addition to extra game releases. One possibility is that Nintendo will create a collection of remasters for the Nintendo Switch.

Out of nowhere, The Legend of Zelda JUST registered a NEW trademark this July, and it covers a LOT of classes. This is 99% for next year’s Zelda 35 anniversary. The trademark listing looks very similar to a filing from last year that seemed to relate to the 35th anniversary of the Mario franchise. Although 2020 has been a bit sparse so far, there have been a number of reports from reputable sources about a series of Mario remasters for the Nintendo Switch. In March, rumors suggested that a collection releasing later in the year will include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Older Super Mario games are also expected to be added to the Switch Online library, rounding out the celebrations for the iconic series.

If 2020 does see a collection of Mario remasters for the Nintendo Switch, it will only lead to anticipation for future The Legend of Zelda remasters. The action-adventure franchise has a number of games that have never been remastered or remade, making them ideal for bringing across to the latest console. It makes sense for Nintendo, too, as a collection containing upgraded titles would no doubt appeal to older players as well as those with little experience of The Legend of Zelda, especially when it is still unknown exactly when Breath of the Wild 2 will release.
