Next Pokemon TCG Expansion Reveals More Pokemon Tag Teams

Pokemon: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds will be bringing back the Pokemon tag team mechanic that first appeared just under a month ago when the Team Up expansion released on February 1. The newest expansion will continue to build on that theme, introducing several impressive Pokemon team-ups that are sure to make long-time fans of the franchise excited.

The Pokemon TCG has been quietly experiencing some of the best formats the game has hosted in some time. Each recent expansion has managed to diversify competitive decks enough that there’s still room for experimentation even at the top tables, although like any TCG, there typically remains one or two ‘decks to beat’ at any given tournament. With Pokemon Sword & Shield on the horizon, the Pokemon TCG will likely experience a surge of interest, which makes the next few expansions prior to the Switch games’ release date vital in securing a healthy entry point for would-be consumers.

Pokemon: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds will release globally on May 3, 2019. The newest expansion will feature over 210 differnt cards, including 7 new tag team Pokemon-GX cards and seven addition regular Pokemon-GX cards. Unbroken Bonds will also release 25 Trainer cards into the game’s Standard format. Trainers tend to make a big impact on their formats if they’re particularly powerful, so fans of the game will undoubtedly have their eyes peeled for spoilers regarding that card type specifically.

Pokemon: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds has already given fans a little bit to work with when it comes to new information, though. Here’s a list of confirmed tag team Pokemon-GX cards making their debut in the newest expansion:

The most interesting pairing is definitely the last one, where long-time series favorite and Super Smash Bros. competitor Lucario is teaming up with the recently discovered Melmetal. According to rumor, Meltan, Melmetal’s previous evolutionary form, could play a major part in a new kind of Pokemon Sword & Shield evolution, and the Pokemon TCG could be laying the foundation for introducing that mechanic into the card game as well with the introduction of Melmetal to its competitive card pool.

Fans looking to try out Pokemon: Sun & Moon—Unbroken Bonds won’t have to wait until May to do so, either. The TCG will be hosting prerelease tournaments across the world that take place between April 20-28, with select locations offering packs ahead of their scheduled launch. Despite being in a field ostensibly about critiquing and enjoying quality games, his most played game of 2019 was Fate/Grand Order – something unlikely to change in 2020 and beyond.
