Nicole Kidman Tried To Back Out Of Lucille Ball Role After Casting Criticism

Nicole Kidman recently revealed that she attempted to back out of playing Lucille Ball in the upcoming Being the Ricardos. The soon-to-be-released biopic of I Love Lucy stars, real-life couple Ball and Desi Arnaz (played by Javier Bardem), will receive a limited theatrical release on December 10, before releasing on Amazon Prime on December 21. Being the Ricardos is the third film directed by Aaron Sorkin, who is known for his work on the groundbreaking political drama, The West Wing, as well as directing Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Sorkin had been working on the movie for five years prior to filming, and Kidman’s casting was a major announcement that came from the production.

Sorkin’s film depicts a single week of production on I Love Lucy, showing the tension that came from Ball and Arnaz’s marriage, while also portraying some work done on the landmark comedy series. A lot of the promotional material has focused on the two leads, since they are playing two iconic figures in television history, and because Amazon is presumably going to push Bardem and Kidman for Academy Awards consideration. J.K. Simmons, Alia Shawkat, and Clark Gregg also star. After the casting announcement was made, many argued that Kidman doesn’t resemble Ball, which has led to some discourse and controversy. Sorkin has countered this by saying he was looking for more than simple imitation from his actors.

Now, Kidman has talked about what it was like getting the role and the response to her casting. In an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan (via People), Kidman discusses how she wanted to walk away from playing Ball due to the backlash. She discusses the immense pressure from taking the role and how Sorkin helped. Check out her full quote below:

“I wasn’t initially. Initially, Aaron Sorkin wrote this screenplay that you read and you cannot put down. I say to people: ‘If you can get your hands on this screenplay, read it because it’s such a good read. It’s as good as a great novel.’

I went, ‘What have I said yes to?’ — to which I then went, ‘Oh no, I’m not right. Everyone thinks I’m not right so I’m going to try to sidestep this,'” she said. And the producer Todd Black and Aaron Sorkin were both like, ‘Absolutely not.’ I was in Australia and they were like, ‘No.’ And thank god, because then I was so grateful because I got to fall in love with her.”

Again, one of the most common complaints about Kidman’s casting is that she does not bear much resemblance to Ball. Lucille Ball is one of the most iconic actresses in television history, so it is understandable that fans want her portrayal to be done right. However, the film has not been released yet, so audiences should reserve their judgement of Kidman’s casting until the film officially comes out, so they can see the full extent of her performance. A majority of people have only seen trailers so far, which are but brief glimpses into the full film that obviously don’t provide enough for valid criticism.

Sorkin’s defense of Kidman shows his trust in her as Ball, as well as the aim for a performance that is both respectful and accurate. Additionally, even Ball’s daughter Lucie Arnaz is behind Kidman’s casting. This shows that the creative team on Being the Ricardos supports Kidman, which helped quell her fears mentioned in the interview. Based on Kidman’s well-respected and celebrated career, there’s a very good chance her portrayal will change the minds of those upset by the casting.
